He guys, I'm a very bad driver and still crash into things so it cost me alot of money. But they took all money I saved over time and that's not fair. I should be able to crash infinite times but not pay more than I earned from current month. Can this be changed? Because it effectively gatekeeps me from buying a new car.
That comparison would be only valid somewhere without traffic rules and roads.
Nothing is ever forcing you to use roads and follow traffic rules.
Like nothing is forcing you to stay in a safe tier range according to your skill, gear and build.
If you want to push too the limit and die doing so, please, go for it. But don't complain afterwards when you were advised by common sense not to do so.
Yawn

If the only reason someone plays this game is because of an XP penalty on death, this must be a very bad game indeed.
You can still have a challenging game (which this is) without completely disrespecting players time.

It's terrible, why in 2024 would you disrespect players so bad when that 10% could be an hour or more of their real life time, But like I dont delete my save file in single player games when i die or delete all my gear in wow, or uniinstall mods in warfraem etc. Like are pnuishing mechanices from the late 90's the "vision" that will see this game have 2k players in a year?
This topic goes forever :D
GGG is very stubborn with this idea ...XP penalty has completely no sense speaking about business. Making game for gaming minority was good in 2010.
generally on this stage game on full release will not have success at all.

The day they remove XP penalty is the day that 80% of players will come back to play the game!
Yeah, for 1 week before they notice how boring and lame it is without any challenge.

Adding my voice in the hope they tone down Xp death penalty as it always the thing that makes me quit endgame in the end. Perhaps like D2 with gold you could protect part of it “in your stash!”… have lock points along the progression bar beyond which you cannot fall further

I actually agree, mostly because getting levels is not that fast or easy once you pass 80, and really slows down towards level 90.
To be able to do harder and harder content you need those passives and stats, but you cannot get them without mindlessly farming same content hoping you don't get deleted by random invisible explosion.
Which brings me to the main issue. As long as I can get randomly oneshot by white mob exploding in a sea of mobs, exp penalty should not exist.
Unless I have full ability to avoid death and death is considered my fault, I don't think exp penalty should exist.

Yeah, an XP penalty is genuinely massively outdated design. Nobody has the time for that.
It's literally the only reason I play this game and that's precisely because of how "outdated" it is. XP loss at the very least was expected in RPGs for the better part of a generation; some games forced you to return to where you died to retrieve your items and others just deleted your character outright.
I played PvP games in the 90s where when the opposing faction killed you not only did you drop all of your items, but they were allowed to loot them and share them with each other. They would record these sessions and post them online to rub it in your face. And my god do I miss it.
The story I don't buy for a minute is that XP loss is somehow more punitive to "older" and more casual gamers because I'm both and I know many people like me and the one thing we all agree on is we don't fucking care whether or not we reach max level and we're not wasting time comparing ourselves to others. XP loss hurts to be sure but the only thing it means is that we need to do a little better next time and that what makes the game fun. The little incremental improvements over time you make to prevent the next death.
Literally what's the point of this game without XP penalty? Why would ANYONE do ANYTHING except dump every single affix and passive point into maximizing DPS to become the most boring glass cannon imaginable? And then what are you doing?
We can all click our mouses guys. It's not that hard. That's what the game becomes without XP penalty - just click your mouse on the moving thing and when it stops moving click on the next moving thing. It's the gaming equivalent of paint by numbers.
You think there's a lack of build variety NOW? Remove the XP penalty and literally everyone will play the same 3 builds and all of them will be boring as fuck.
The day they remove XP penalty is the day I quit PoE forever.
You might have had something approaching a point if the game did not employ cheap tricks to kill people even after they have won. The only way you can get me to agree to an XP penalty or similar in any game is if the developers can 100% guarantee every death is solely the fault of the player and not something outside of their control that cannot be consistently and reliably outplayed or countered.

Disable pausing during combat and everyone supporting XP pen will immediately change their tune.

Honest question. Why not just do the dark souls system of having to kill the monsters that killed you to retrieve your xp?
