Ugly but useful or beautiful but useless?

One mechanic which I love in some games similar to PoE that actually displays the equipped item on your character and that I believe could be applied to PoE is being able to sacrifice another item to transform the appearance of a certain item you own.

Some times you find an item that is so absurdly good for your build and your character but you just really severely doesn't like how it looks on you. Being able to get another item and destroy it to consume its appearance as a re-skin to that item, be the item type or that specific item (meaning you'd need to do it again for another item in the future) would be an interesting mechanic to consider.

They did that in PoE1 where you need to pay MTX points every single time you do this to an item – which is ridiculous and why nobody used it.
I think they mentioned having planned some form of transmogrification in PoE2. I just hope they do it in a way that actually makes me want to use it.
Paying points once and the item then being added to your regular MTX would be a good option, in my opinion.
Best system is definitely in Grim Dawn. You go to an npc and he allows you to switch looks per piece, and it keeps track of every piece of armor/weapon you looted with a unique appearance which you can use.

IIRC the transmog MTX also permanently destroys the item that supplies the reskin (it's not reversible).

(There are also some pairs of MTX skins that you can permanently destroy to create impressive unique new skins that combine elements of each, like the Piety-Sin combo).
