Contagion and Essence Drain Targeting Issues

It is very common for me to attempt to use essence drain or contagion on a specific monster, only to see the spell get cast in a completely different direction. Sometimes towards a different mob entirely, and sometimes towards open air.

I am using mouse + keyboard controls, but it feels like the targeting system is trying to use WASD controls instead.
