Has anyone else realized how - lore wise- Diablo 2 was nothing but a huge Screw you to the fans?

that town you worked so hard to save?
destroyed
that demon you fought so hard to kill
still alive
that guy you spent hours grinding with to make him strong enough to do all the above?
caused all of the above

Edit: Character from diablo 1 gets possessed by diablo, seeds adria with the spawn of diablo, destroys everything diablo 1 works to save

diablo 2 was groundbreaking. the lore was great in my opinion, atmosphere was perfect, very immersive , god i played the crap outta that game. :D

i don't think its so much of a disappointment, it was a great time.

diablo 3 however feels like a big f u

no stats

no world pvp

no hostile

longgggg boss battles

no mana for barbs

wow bulky toon animations

battlenet 2.0

cheesy boss lines

pony level that looks like it came out of a wc3 map

d2 was wayyy cooler. it is still better imo.
Phase 1: Make D3

Phase 2: ?

Phase 3: Profit

If you think that the progression from D1 to D2 was a 'screw you' to the fans of D1 because events of D2 progressed D1's but in a very depressing, dark manner, then I dread to think what you feel about Game of Thrones.

...Why make a clear point when an analogy makes people work that much harder to get there? ^_^

If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.

The hero jammed a demon crystal into his skull. If you thought it could end there you were very shortsighted.

I can't wait for D4: Attack of the happy glittery fairy rainbow ponies!
POE is a constantly evolving game, so expect balance changes, buffs and nerfs STILL!
D1 and D2 both had great lore. D3 is when the lore began to fall apart.
Anyway, D2's lore did an excellent job at picking up where D1 left off.

I've grown up with a lot of "Happy ending" stories (all that Disney movies, parent-approved) and discovered the "unhappy ending stories" for myself. I began reading Poe and a LOT of other old authors from that time by ten (may have left me a bit scarred), and from then on, I was hooked.

Now, I don't mean that a happy ending can't do it for me any more. They can be quite good if done right. But what those stories (and Diablo's is one of them) showed me was that the ending of a story can be great, even if it's on a low note.
What matters is if the story in itself is well-crafted.

And Diablo's and Diablo II's was, in my opinion. D3 dropped the ball with that one, though.

By the way, when I had read through the first Game Of Thrones book five or six years back, my sister (not much of a reader) asked me what it was about.
I then said something to the effect of: "Oh, it's a GREAT story, but it's much to complicated to rattle it off in a few sentences. You'd love it if they made it into a TV series or film. Sadly, this will never happen."

And then it happened. And my sis is loving the show.

edit: Do you remember the fan outcry over the stag butchered by Lord Tywin being a cheap prop?
Well, there are hunters in my family, so I'm familiar with what a dead animal looks like. And all I could think of in the scene was: "Holy nuckchuts, they actually used a REAL stag for that one?!"

The only series that actually made me shout out "NOOOooOOOooOO"
If GGG chickens made an action RPG, what would it be called? Path of Eggxile, a Peck 'n' Slash RPG.
Why was the helmet spluttering? It was a coif.

I've actually never read the books, and since this is a thread about D2 and not GoT, I'll keep this brief: loved the stag, introduced Tywin *perfectly*, great show, love love love.

Point is, and Avireyn got this, of course -- if the writers are faithfully to the material and the Story So Far, it doesn't matter whether it's dark or light. Faithfulness is a credit to the writers and to the fans. And unfortunately, the only way to faithfully make a sequel to Diablo 1 is to show not only that Evil Survived, but what its survival wrought.

Without turning this into yet another Ahem-you-know-what thread, I think that faithfulness was lost between 2001 and now. Name-dropping a few familiar characters and the like doesn't cut it. To make a proper sequel, you need to think very carefully about what would happen next.

D2 did this to D1. Big time.

you ever played the Mass Effect series ? at least ME 1 and 2 ?
Then play ME3 and watch the ending. That ridiculous piece of nonsensical garbage is sooo ridiculous. That is a 'screw you' in every possible way.

[Possible SPOILERS for ME3, extremely generalized and indirect though]

Spoiler
It basically ruins the series by saying "ok you know the ME universe was never really about all of that. it was actually about this ONE thing, (that doesn't make sense at all, isn't connected at all, and is just pure stupid and naive, and can actually be proven wrong by the player in ME3 !!!!)"

ending personalization and ABC ending is waaaay down the list of issues lol.

I know ME is not the same type is diablo or POE, but just sayin...
you exist because I allow it, and you will die because I demand it
