I figured out a way to effectively use Firestorm with Crits in mind.

Nevermind, I was wrong. *sigh*

Is that really how it works? I thought it would just start a new timer for the firestorm burn, and that burn would take over once the fireball burn had run out.
Face it, all of your suggestions are worse than this idea:

I'm fairly certain that's indeed how it works. I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

Maybe Mark will clear it up, I will go to the mechanics thread and check if there's any info there, and update accordingly.
seems like an unnecessary hassle... if your fireball already more than triples your firestorm on crit why bother with fire storm at all?

fireball already has viable aoe capabilities because of the explosion.
Interesting tips. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, would be great if GGG could respond to confirm or clarify it.
pretty cool info, thanks for screwing with the mechanics
and noticing this. Look forward to updates.

True.

For example, if I use Fireball(the skill) and get a critical hit, then use Firestorm and get a critical hit, all that will do is reset the time for the burn at the damage rate of the Fireball's critical.
False.

The highest burn takes priority at any given time, but each burn is separate. Critting with firestorm is adding new burns, it doesn't somehow extend any existing burns. When the burn from the fireball runs out, the highest remaining burn becomes the active one.
No, that's not how it works. You can't simply crit once with a high damage fire spell and then keep continually extending the duration using weaker fire crits.

From the wiki:

"
Separate applications of Ignite do not stack cumulatively. Each ignite effect remains present on the target until it runs its course, but only the one with the highest damage per second will cause damage at any given moment. For example, assume an enemy is inflicted with Ignite for 100 damage per second, then after 2 seconds it is inflicted with Ignite for 50 damage per second. The outcome will be 400 damage over 4 seconds followed by 100 damage over 2 seconds.

So basically, if you have another application of ignite on a target which is already burning, the highest damage burn will run its course for whatever its full duration is (4 seconds by default, though this can be extended), then the next highest damage ignite will take over, then the next, and so on.

*sigh*, ok. Thanks for the info.

I'd hoped I'd figure something cool out. :( Oh well.
And this is why fire is generally terrible... why everyone uses frost or lighting in the end.

Fire does about 132% damage over 4 seconds?

Lightning adds 40% per stack up to 3. So the first stack is 140% damage, the next is 180% and the final is 220% damage.

Notice how with fire you hit, do 132% damage of that hit over 4 seconds and additional hits are just wasted.

If/when they fix fire so that additional burn's are additive, increase duration as the OP suggested, or otherwise it will just be an off beat damage type that players can toy around with but will never become top end useful builds.
