if you exit the arena of the Cortex during its animation of death, then when you return, the portal to the rest of the map will not appear, as well as loot from the Cortex

Its actually intended. You need to stay dead until the animation finishes and loot drops

double confirming its intended, was done a long time ago to stop some abuse/exploit.
