EU High Latency (Amsterdam = Canada???)
For a long time I've had occasional high latency problems.
Maybe in 1 out of every 5-10 maps (roughly). I decided to investigate a bit using WinMTR, extracting the instance IP from the log (Client.txt). I checked every map, both good and bad, and soon noticed a pattern. Maps that ran fine had the IP 203.17.244.XXX. Maps with high latency had the IP 164.152.123.XXX. Doing some IP lookup, the first IP series turned out to be in Amsterdam. This is expected, since I've selected the Amsterdam server (duh). The second IP series however turned out to be located in, uh, Canada!!! Why am I being directed to Canadian servers when playing on Amsterdam? One example WinMTR route: " I'm assuming "amstnl07.nl" is amsterdam, but then: 157.238.231.205: Dallas, Texas, USA 206.148.26.80: Sydney, New South Wales, Australia 223.165.7.49: Perth, Western Australia, Australia 164.152.123.215: Kanata, Ontario, Canada What kind of crazy route is this? I got it explained to me this is actually "by design" by GGG.
If the selected server (Amsterdam) is overloaded you get sent to another server, in my case Canada. Why Canada? I guess since it's kinda on the other side of the globe, when we play they sleep (less crowded). I wish they'd at least try a closer server, another of the EU ones orso. Or maybe be put in a queue or display "instance creation failed". This would suck too, but far better than losing a juiced map/bossfight due to extreme latency. |
