(HC) (SSF) Ruthless makes me feel like a noob (spell suppresion musthave?)

So like title sais...

Spoiler
I play this game now since close to 11 years, after some hard grinds I figured out, that playing hardcore is more my favorite style.
Playing softcore makes your char fast overpowered, the content of the game will soon not be rewarding or challanging anymore (as long you are not that much into trading with micro minmaxing everything).
So I started hardcore, my very first char ripped in the first area by hillock cuz of bad flask utilisation, the next char also ripped during the campaign, the third hit maps and reached 85/90, I could collect all the rare items, all uniques, I made some twinks, the thrill of the possibility to rip was still arround me, but once you hit arround 85, with the right build you are less and less scared to die, as long you know the content. I traded for BiS gear, and soon the game become more and more like softcore.
I started hardcore ssf. Finally the real gameplay I was looking for!
No more the interruption of my gameplay during maps to sell some items.
No more ezpz hit the max out of your char.
You see the incredible journey of your poor exile, waking up on strand with nothing than his/her hands, a rotten weapon and a shitty skill, now blasting all the content away. Amazing!

I was wondering how ruthless will feel like...

I started hcssf ruthless, and it was a pain in the ar*e to level up threw the campaign, killing kitava was like OMG I DID IT, just to realize that mapping is far not what this char is ready for...
After far too many runs in act 10 and far too many T1 maps the char hit like 80, and finally could got higher and faster.
I hit lvl 85 or 86, and thought, hell, it is time to make a twink.

First twink died in beach close before king fight. He was far overleveled but I was too tired to play and did not realize that the char is standing in a scorcbeam.
As it was my fault, I started the char on the next day.

Lvl 71 in act 8 (far far far overleveled) I try to get the third ascendancies of the wood (of lab I already collected) and search the "forbidden woods" bosses. Takes like 1 hour till they spawn, it was so surprising, that I unfortunatly run into them and woke them up.

But well, I was level 71, the area was level 62, I had 3 endurance charges, close to 5k life, 80+ phys mitigation, 20 evade, 78 fire 77 light/cold res, 65 chaos res, 450 liferegen, 15% of dmg goes to totem, I thought, what should happen to me...
Rip.
Got stunned I think, it was to fast to be sure, 1/5 of my life ploped down, again, again, again, again, dead.

Now I do not play poe each league, I did not got all of the changes at all, so I am still at the knowledge that it is mandatory to have several def mechanics.
Also that it is very important to do enough damage, otherwise you will rip.
I could not find any CWDT to set it up with anything useful.
Also it was my very first char without spell suppresion.

So I still do not understand why my char ripped (flametotem ezpz hiro).
Was it cuz of stun? How is this even possible to a 10 lvl overpowered char and 5k life?
Was it because of missing spellsuppresion?

Spoiler

I love playing poe hardcore, it feels so save to not die by dc, most games feel a lot more rippy to dcs, I died many times and most of those times I have learned a lot about the game mechanics, and so performed better.
Now this time I simply have no clue.
I feel like a noob.

Any advices?

Many bosses are special and for not extremely overgeared (this is going to be hard/impossible in Ruthless SSF HC) characters need special treatment. Walking in blind, ignoring mechanics and expecting the builds defenses to make you survive is not how the game is designed. My list for defenses:

"
For basic/vanilla defensive layers - roughly in that order:

0. Game Knowledge
1. Movement and positioning. Dont get hit by big things. Dont get group-mobbed. This is the most important defensive layer for most mapping builds. It has player and build components.
2. Elemental resists, should be overcapped. How much depends: If you have the curses cant lower them then 25% overcap are good for mapping.
3. Buffer: You need enough life/ES/whatever. How much depends on the other things. You also need to be able to recover it.
4. Something against phys stuff. Like Armour. With good buffer 10k armour may be enough for mapping. With less buffer (most SC mapping builds) you need more.
5. Attack Avoidance: Evasion or block.
6. Something against bleed and corrupted blood. If you dont have a permanent solution then bleed can easily stealth kill leading to "random" deaths.
7. Chaos resist. How much depends on buffer size.
8. Ele ailment reduction or better immunity.
9. Spell Suppression. Or spell block. Or some Aegis skill or some such. Or more max resist + phys mit.
10. Crit damage reduction.
11. Curse effect reduction. This ranks higher if you do not have immunity to resist lowering curses and are not sufficiently overcapped.

So based on your post its likely a #0 issue. To fix that find out what boss it is, look it up in poedb, watch some guide or something and then you can maybe determine whether its a build or gameplay problem.

And if its the icy trio mini bosses: IME - if they are like the map bosses, dont really know - these are prone to cause damage spikes, you need to systematically move out of the way. Circling mostly works but at least if they got other targets its not 100% safe. Dont know if they do spell damage or not, thats where you would want to look them up in poedb.
No wonder it's lost, it's in the middle of the jungle!
I decided to do Eternal at one point to see if I could. Once was enough; I don't get a thrill from HC.

But if I were trying HC in Ruthless, I would play Ruthless quite a bit in SC first to make sure I understood how it was different.

And then there are the three general rules for HC, which apply whether Ruthless or not:

1. If you're not sure you can do it without dying, don't do it.
2. If you don't understand the mechanics, don't do it.
3. Never forget rules 1 and 2.

I do enjoy SSF and it feels like a nice fit for Ruthless, so it's on my list to try, but definitely SC!

Good luck!!
Thx for replies, honestly not really helpful at all.
Like written, I have already made a main lvl 86, I killed those 3 minibosses several times with ez..

And so I also understand mechanics and def priority as well..

My questions are:

How is it possible to become stunned by a -10 lvl difference monster and with my high life pool?

Is spell suppression mandatory to survive late game?
If not, how high / what other layer are necessary to compensate the missing supression?

Sounds like you were in WW. Even after all the patching, it's pretty rippy content. Since that's this league, I'm not sure it's completely understood what mods and abilities some of those mobs have. Might have been something other than a stun.

It's been a couple of years so suppression is a new one for me. I imagine it depends on what content you are trying to survive. But someone who's been playing with it for a couple of leagues will have a better answer, I'm sure.
Were you in the wildwood? If so it sounds like the incarnation of agony which is the most
BS boss they introduced this league.
