I got the two transfigured gems that I wanted in less than 10 labs runs, took 2 hours or so in SSF.

I did it in the 3rd lab iteration as I was preparing to go from campaign to maps before Kitava and replaced the time I would have normally spent in Foothills, leveling and gearing up in preparation for maps.

It’s really no bigger time sink in SSF than any other farming that may be necessary for a build.

SSF is for those of us that like the extra grind and it feels great when one finds that piece or craft that has been worked for. It is not an instant gratification mode like trade.

So because you got lucky its fine? :D
I mean i guess you play a red gem? They are totally fine to farm but if you want a green or blue gem it can be a real pain.

Last league i farmed 8 hours for 1 penance brand with less than 5 minutes per lab, i target farmed a bunch of gems because i wanted to try them out and spend so much time in lab, it almost made me quit, i dont want to do it ever again.

I have over 3k hours and this league is my first league where i went trade instead of ssf simply becaues the thought of having to run labs because of something so trivial like a skill gem makes me not want to play. ( i quit my ssf character in act 10 after 8 or so lab runs)

If its ggg's intention to drive people away from ssf the have succeeded in my case

All the "you chose to play SSF" boys can shut up, OP is 100% right. Lab sucks, and doing 100s of it to get your gems is toxic.

Bump
Both statements are correct - you chose to play SSF, nobody else to blame and the lab is godawful
Just tired of running lab usually for a single gem or two.

Yes, it's much more accessible than Grand Heists ever will be, but at least heists allow you to farm other things as well since it poops bubblegum currency all the time, other support gem alternate qualities could help a lot, and you get regrading lens as a reward so you could save them and attempt to get your desired gem later.

I do get the fact I play SSF so therefore I shouldn't be able to complain about having shit luck or w/e, but it's still frustrating as hell. If only lab was reworked to be better overall (both in terms of "fun" since pretty much everyone I know hates running it and in rewards), the first uber lab you ran in a character gave you something to exchange for a transfigured of your choice, and/or you could itemize your divine font usages it would already feel much, much better.

There are many possible ways to solve this issue.

I just wish GGG would let go of their death grip on "trying to enforce" trading. I know it's balanced around trading and GGG will probably never change its ways, but the consensus within my guild is that the game would feel much better if it wasn't, especially after playing Last Epoch.

It's fine, though, we can't have it all.

100% it would and not just that but im convinced that trade is not balanceable, because no matter what they do, the abundance of items and ease of access will always result in OP builds that trvialize the game, just buy all the dmg uniques and a mageblood to fix defense and have 50 mil dmg.
Its pointless to try to balance around that
Honestly, I think people wouldn't have much issue with SSF being as difficult as it is if GGG balanced it to factor in not being able to trade for rare items.

I still stand by my belief that all of the best crafting leagues such as pre-nerf Harvest, Sentinel, Crucible, and now Necropolis, should be exclusive SSF features once their 4 month debut is over, and make it so you can't transfer SSF characters out so as to prevent ruining the trade league market.

This is one of several ways GGG could make SSF more enticing without it being a masochism mode. Another way is to readjust reward chances for things you can't obtain via crafting such as trans gems, boss-exclusive drops (ex. Watcher's Eye), etc.

But until that happens, if that ever happens, SSF is nothing more than a mode for masochists who don't think the game is hard enough and the only way for you to feel anything anymore is to shoot yourself in the foot.
PoE players: Our game has a wide diversity of builds.

Also PoE players: The [league mechanic] doesn't need to be nerfed, you just need to play a [current meta] build!
