DD vs Volatile Dead question

Hello, I am playing a build designed for Detonate Dead, but I'm finding that I kind of like volatile dead, I expect the support gems might be a different setup, but would the passive trees tend to stay the same for the 2 skills? Appreciate any input, thanks.
