" I just have to reply to this very briefly :) I do NOT advocate making penalties less harsh, and never did (for example, I would've felt perfectly happy with multiple curses applied all the time). My original question was caused purely by the unusual choice: to give and take away the same thing - damage. Usually it's "give more life, take sockets", "give increased rarity, take resists"...
