I was forced to change my character's names

Hello,
Today I logged in after a couple of years and I was forced to change the name of of some of my characters. Other people have stolen the nicknames I used for my characters, and now I can't have the name I have originally chosen. Why is that? the name expired if you don't login and use that character for like a year or so
