Why can TOTA mobs one shot us and we can't one shot them?

How is this fair in a tourney or even fun?

I like the base concept of TOTA but the balancing is way out of whack

*sigh*, no everything doesn't one shot you. The storm crow is the most notable example. It hits you and applies a massive shock debuff but it doesn't one shot you if you have some nominal defenses. Hell, even some bosses don't always one shot you. The archer boss, for example, sometimes does not one shot me at a high rating and I am not that tanky.

Also, it is a myth that you need a specialized build to "farm" the mechanic. Yesterday I reached rank 2,000 with my EA Champion without having to use a single crowd control ability other than totems

Ask this guy, he says they don't.

In tota, YOU ARE NOT IMPORTANT.

You need to let your units fight for you and distract the enemies while you work on the totems. Get your defenses up, max spell suppression and dodge chance, do everything you can to survive and play around the edges of the map. If a Storm Conduit is targeting you, you're not distracting them well enough with your own units.

then why bother playing?

also if you get weak units to start with and the opposition gets better ones, your odds of winning are very slim

And the mobs from the opponent are so intelligent in targeting. While yours circles around crazy.
