What does nearby mean?

I have "Regenerate 150 Energy Shield per second while a Rare or Unique Enemy is Nearby" on a belt.

Anywhere from right next to your character to a screen away. The wiki contains a lot of common "nearby" distances but it is definitely one of the least intuitive things they have in the game.
