[Wiki] The Official Unofficial Path of Exile Wiki Project
|
As you may well be aware, Path of Exile does not currently have an existing central location for all the player and developer released information related to the game. There are a variety of threads strewn about the forums, but if you just want to find out a bit of information regarding any particular topic, you are going to have to know where to look.
There are currently two attempts at operating a wiki that I am aware of, but they have failed and gone stale due to a very obvious issue: they seem to have been set up and developed by singular individuals. And these individuals weren't very motivated to keep up with their projects. A wiki requires a concerted community effort to succeed—that's practically the entire basis behind a wiki! And that's where you all come in; we need help first from some skilled individuals to get a wiki set up and looking nice, and second from the community as a whole to fill it all up with the valuable knowledge contained on this forum and onward into the future of the game. I've titled this the "Official Unofficial" wiki project because the (general) idea has already been approved by some GGG staff (thanks for that, Silva!). Let this thread serve as a discussion for this project: ideas, offers of support, comments and criticism, etc. To move forward with the wiki, we need: • Hosting I'm willing to chip in. I've had Dream Host recommended to me before – they provided unlimited bandwidth and disk space on all their plans which is great. I think a $15/month VPS would do but I'm not too well versed in this area. • A domain name Since pathofexilewiki.com is taken and the admin is MIA, we'll have to use an alternative unless he returns and offers to relinquish that domain. Alternatively, poewiki.net anyone? I almost prefer that as it is shorter. Someone else is sitting on poewiki.com, I wish people wouldn't grab up these domains so much without any motivation to do something... • Designers and Developers People with web design and/or development experience willing to lend some time to style the wiki and help get all the wikimedia software above the basic installation. If anyone has any experience managing a wikimedia site or doing any type of styling, your help would be appreciated! • Contributors! Obviously the biggest part after a place is all set up. This includes people writing articles but also people willing to moderate it all - we don't want to be inundated with spam as pathofexilewiki.com is at the moment. Let us now get this party started. If this gains some momentum, a sticky from the forum moderators would be swell! Last edited by izzalion#4252 on Jun 1, 2012, 3:13:09 PM

Thanks for posting this, I can't wait to see this project get off the ground! If you want I could get in contact with Samantha (the CM) about getting this thread stickied if needed (:

That would be great, but I think we should see if there's any support in the community first before stickying.
What say ye, community? |

|
Why'd we not want a wiki? Go straight ahead.

I like this mans thinking.
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to always tell the difference.

It's not exactly whether people want one or not, it's who's willing to contribute what is currently required.

Although I have no skills involving website-creation, I hope this project will work. We do need a wiki, much like any successful game.

Don't we have http://pathofexile.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page
Is there something wrong with this site? I mean, other than the lack of people updating it? I think there's nothing wrong with just using what's already there. If you want to help, get cracking on adding information there. |

" That is why the Wikia page isn't a good basis for the Path of Exile wiki. We need to start afresh. God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to always tell the difference.

Also, the admins aren't active. Also also, wikia isn't generally as good a platform as a custom wikimedia platform.
Silva has been looking into getting something set up that's a start - how's that going, by the way? |
