No life nodes in POE 2
" Now that you mention it. And speaking of impact of uniques on your characters power. In case they transfer some of the OG uniques to POE2 with similar stats, uniques will be more impactful, while keeping in mind that support gems will have minimal damage increases if any at all. well everyone has the same tree life so it should be balanced life wise. i think it's good. more pathing to defence and dmg nodes. so i won't complain about that if done right.
3.26 when?

I hate this change, speaking as someone who likes Rathpith Globe, Bloodthrist support, Iron WIll Strength stackers and other mechanics. This just removes a tank/defensive mindset mechanic from the playing field and the logic or reasoning behind removing % life scaling applies exactly the same to Damage % or increased Crit or Armour or any other.
Mostly I feel like its a poorly justified change, that removes design space. I also have to consider just how poor GGG has historically been at balancing time to live. More life multiplied by more defense is essential to compensating for their inability (or seemingly complete lack of awareness) of this design parameter. If they had said "'were doing this to make POE2's time to live design easier to balance" I could get behind it... but their reasoning is actually 100% spurious and again can be applied to literally any other scaling mechanic in the game. Pandering to players who don't want consequences for their mistakes is a perfect description of what went fundamentally wrong with D3 and 4.
If they wanted mindless mobile game time waster gameplay they sure did make some perplexing choices and marketing statements for 6 fucking years. |

Nah.
Life is nothing but a build tax on the tree. You picked up every life node within reach of your start every single time, period, with the one exception of Chaos Inoculation. There's nothing interesting there, no buildcraft decision to make, nada - you get the life or you suck, no third option. Build taxes are anathema to Interesting Decision-based gameplay and need to be culled from the game as much as they possibly can be. Besides, nobody ever said you can't invest in life. You just can't do it on the passive tree. Other sources of +life might well still exist. She/Her Last edited by 1453R#7804 on Aug 9, 2023, 8:00:47 PM

I hope and expect it won't tbe this simple, but I'm not pleased by such a change for a few reasons.
1) every level 80 ranger (say) has exactly the same pre-gear life as every other? Sounds the opposite of diversity. If I want to build a glass cannon now by favouring damage over HP, I can. If I want to go tanky, I can. It's easier with some classes than others, and far easier with some builds than others, and it's not perfectly balanced. But I have the choice. 2) life on the tree allows a measure of skill. Especially for SSF, or for HC, you can plan and depend on what you have when. If life is only on gear, either you trade, you no-life, you get very lucky or you die. No skill in this, and no control, it's down to what drops and if you haven't had life rolls on usable gear you die. 3) life on gear becomes a pure checkbox. There's not even a consideration of anything without life unless it's godly, because you're losing 10-20% of your character life right there. There's no build planning any more, it's literally a shopping list. "Buy items with this much life on". Fine if you want to play cheat code and grind/RMT currency to buy other people's lucky drops, but such a game won't keep me playing 10 hours never mind 10 years. " Characters will get more life per level up (to compensate for removed life on tree) and (the buffed) town vendors can sell basic life gear for gold. That gear is obviously not BIS or good (as drops) but its a start to get you going. Masterpiece of 3.16 lore

" I don't think this addresses any of my three drawbacks, though? Indeed, it emphasises all three. More life/level is removing player agency (how do I balance life/defence/damage off the tree) and making it automatic. Every class of the same level has the same life. Buying basic life gear for gold from the vendors = more poor-weight trade in the game, less control, and less choice. And shopping vendor inventory every level is not my idea of an engrossing ARPG. Even if the gear were good - and affordable - which are NOT characteristics of any vendor gear ever seen in PoE thus far, bar 6S and the occasional movespeed boots at levels 1-5. " PoE2 is a different game though, you're picturing this being tacked on to what we have currently. In theory (1) is still in full play as there will still be defensive options on the tree and it will be up to you which ones to go for and how deeply to invest. We could have fewer, the same, or more axes of defense to invest in and if same/more then this concern goes away. For (2 & 3) I don't see how that's different than today? Character building is already a series of checkboxes if that's how you approach the game. Exactly or overcap your resource gen, your resists, your this, your that, etc. What life build isn't already getting as much life as they can on every piece? If you're going to tell me that some builds today use uniques/rares without life I promise in PoE2 there will be some builds that run uniques/rares without +life. PoE2 will have a different set of checkboxes. Let them cook. |
