Snipers Mark gem Tag

Why does snipers mark gem tag not list projectiles? Its totally about projectiles!! would be nice to have it socketed where projectile gems get extra levels, just wondering?

Because the mark is not a projectile. The tags usually describe what the skill itself does. Not what it affects.
To be fair this is a legitimate question. Snipers mark has "spell, curse, mark". Assassins mark has "critical, spell, curse, mark". And Assassins mark doesn't crit either.

I think it may be for balance reasons, since the +2 projectile gem level from corrupted implicit that isn't there for critical tagged skill gems. But that is a very isolated guess in a complex environment.

Fair point. Not sure which one would be considered out of line then.
Each gem tag is attributed according to certain requirements. If a gem meets the requirement, it get the tag. Balance plays no role here.

Speaking of (active) skill gem tags, Critical tag is for skills that has modifiers to crit, not that can crit. Projectile tag is for skills that fire projectiles.

However, in some cases this attribution is arbitrary. For example, Stone Golem has a Physical tag, even though it has no physical or armour-related modifiers, unlike other Physical gems.

Stone golem deals physical damage. That is why it has a physical tag.
Assassin's mark modifies your critical chance and critical damage for that mob. That is why it has a critical tag. Sniper's mark modifies your projectile damage for that mob and as another projectile-related effect. That's why it has the projectile ... oh wait.

Tags have been used to balance crafting outcomes in the past, so while it is possible it has nothing to do with balance, stating that it cannot be, is wrong.

there is "+X level to projectiles gem" mod but i can't remember there is critical damage gem tag

so that except Assassins mark, all other gem has consistent gem tag (e.g. projectiles tag skill that directly fire projectile; bane got hex tag but not curse tag because it does not cast curse hex directly). May be GGG just don't bother to remove the critical tag from Assassins mark as not much interaction with critical tag

I'll try again, more detailed.

1. Physical gems have physical or armour-related lines. This is the requirement. Not what damage type the skill deals. It can deal any damage thanks to damage conversion. Skills like Cleave, Sweep, etc. only got this tag when GGG gave them added physical damage back in Legion. Summons that "deal physical damage" – Skeletons, Zombies, Holy Relic – do not have a Physical tag.

2. Skills that fire projectiles have a Projectile tag, this is the requirement. Only skills that fire projectiles have this tag. Sniper's Mark does not fire projectiles. If there was a support gem that provided projectiles split, it would have a Projectile tag.

We're talking about gem tags. As for item mod tags, the rework was caused by reasons you can read here, the changing to crafting outcomes is more like a consiquence. General idea of tags attribution is just checking if an object meets the requirements or not, without having balance in mind.

And again, arbitrary stuff happens. There's at least one gem, that intentionally has improper tag for balance purposes (Withering Step).

That is all I wanted to say. Chaos golem has physical damage reduction and chaos tag. I either misunderstand or it the rules for the tags are not 100% consistent.

Chaos golem deals chaos damage and has chaos in its name

It is not consistent that Raise Zombie does not have physical damage btw
