Thank you for that image. I really don't feel I needed that in my life.

On one hand, I have never seen a picture of Judd but he is from Texas so I assume he is just bigger.

On the other, Chris is bald and that is always a huge advantage in mud wrestling.

Hmm. Further details required.

But if it's a tag team I think I know who Chris would pick as his partner and that could be an utter slaughter.

It's hilarious to see how triggered the people in this thread are getting. Considering how perfect you all think PoE is, it's weird how defensive you get when another arpg even gets mentioned lol methinks thou doth protest too much
^didn't even read the thread.

The whole framing of the query is bait -- by all metrics, it's LE that needs to compete with PoE, but if we spin the words a bit, then there may be room for a conversation. "Is there a chance that PoE may need to fend off/compete with its most obvious competitor, Last Epoch?"

I still think this is a conversation better had in a neutral space rather than either game's stronghold but eh there is definitely a topic worth exploring. If nothing else, Chris would be a fool not to see how blatantly LE tries to fix a lot of PoE's deep-seated shortcomings -- and he is no fool.

On the other side, LE needs to do what PoE itself still hasn't managed: it needs to be its own thing independent of its forebears at a mere glance. Both games are Diablo clones and neither deserve any definition of their own above or beyond that. All else is nuance and nuance comes after individuality, at least when it comes to dominant and primary identity.

Take Warhammer40k Inquisitor for example. When it came out it was far less of an ARPG than it is now, being more mission-orientated than loot-focused. Because it csme with a precooked identity via its unique and instantly recognisable IP, that didn't really matter. It was still an awful game for all sorts of reasons but its nature as ARPG, as a Diablo clone, was secondary to it being a wh40k game. Nowadays its a lot closer to a typical ARPg but people still seem surprised now and then when I recommend it as such. Wait, that's a Diablo style game? I thought it was a shooter. (Lol as if there is any real difference most of the time.)

And that is where LE fails HARD. Zero individuality or memorable unique aesthetics. Why? Because it was made by a handful of Exiles who wanted to do a GGG: make a version of their beloved arpg (D2) but in a form they wanted to play. Problem with that approach is GGG already did it and did it far better. When LE's devs also "partnered" with Tencent the chance for it ever being anything but another egg in Tencent's basket plummeted. It's one thing to be an indie alsoran. We can cheer for that, wish them well. Maybe support. But an alsoran that follows its obvious predecessor into corporate partnership before really proving its own worth to players as anything but an alsoran -- that's a disappointment.

Oh, I get the feeling OP didn't even know that little fact. Kinda hard to compete when you have the same ultimate shareholders. Sure, PoE is owned by Tencent and LE is only something like 15% Tencent but if you don't know a foot in the door when you see one that's on you.

Not massively on-topic, but I’ve always found your enduring respect for CW endearing in light of your feelings towards GGG more generally.
GGG do not offer first-party Technical Support.

Dear Diary...
Plenty of shitheads in history have also not been fools.

The fact that I still think he's a genuinely nice person who means well and isn't personally greedy is the bigger miracle. He has, after all, sailed right past the threshold for business size in terms of its head being almost certainly a sociopath. How can you have that much money and make the sorts of decisions that might ruin lives *daily* and not to some degree be dehumanised and see your employees as a resource rather than...well, people?

Best friend of mine runs a much smaller venture and quite often he confides in me how easy it is to do just that, and it terrifies him.

That is why, or part of why, I was sad and disappointed when Chris sold not just his business to Tencent but also himself. Very likely a condition of the sale but not one he should have taken. PoE isnt the goose that lays golden eggs -- it's just another amazing egg the real goose should have sold once it hatched and became too much for the goose to handle.

And then he (Chris is so amazing he defies science) could have had another egg...hmm, I wonder that might have been.

OR he could have stopped altogether and actually had the time and energy to enjoy the return on his insanely successful product.

Less likely, that. Even at my most cynical I can't believe he was only in it for the money. Far too much excess in PoE. Too much indulgence. You don't spoil a child you view as a product. As a means.

Either way, I may be wrong. He may well be the guy who said, give or take, we will break our own laws for enough money. The origin of that guy can be found in the courting of Kripparrian. Smart business, especially when you know you can admit that is what you did and your players, now by your own admission a lesser priority, will be okay with that. God damn did my heart break a little over the priority queue debacle. Closest I have come to disliking Chris AND thinking this community genuinely stupid for not realising he had shown his hand not so much accidentally but smugly. It was an ugly situation and it was 100% GGG failing.

...so respect? Sure. My respect, much like my scorn, matters nothing. An echo in a canyon carved out of the earth by an orbital laser the size of a Diamond Kiwi. So why not. Dude made a huge successful something out of nothing following a vision and realising how much it needed to change to endure. He went from not even NZ level wealthy to undeniably stinking rich and he took those who believed in him with him, inasmuch as their beliefs translated into early GGG investment. Dude is brilliant and personable. Was. Is. Eh, was and is, in the Hedberg sense.

Why not respect all that?

Maybe respect is a lower bar than it seems. But there is respecting a thing, an action, or a person, and they are all quite different. I respect nuance above almost all else. :)
