The game is suddenly frying my GPU

Hello, I noticed something very strange recently. My GPU is RTX 3080. Meaning that I can play PoE at 60 FPS comfortably on Ultra. Or at least I did before the start of March. I usually put my fans at 50% and have no issue while playing. My card's temperature barely reaches 40 degrees while playing PoE for hours. Thing is, at the start of March it started reaching 80+. I didn't even notice until, no joke, my PC was forcefully shut down because my GPU was frying.

For comparison, Hogwarts Legacy is a way newer and more graphic intensive game, yet, inside the castle at least, I can get 60 degrees at around 50 fan speed. That's right, somehow PoE is more demanding that Hogwarts Legacy. And I have no clue how this happened. I never changed any graphics option. I even forced my PC to be capped at 60 FPS and still - nothing.

60 to 80 degrees are normal temperatures for the 3080 when gaming.

also the game is permanently changed, new stuff which maybe isn't fully optimised, is added and can cause a rise in denamd for calculation power.

i wouldn't forcefully lower the max fan speed and let the card handle it. it's maybe ok for games that get no updates to live with a higher temperature and less noise but poe is different.

Nope. Likely a DirectX problem because I switched to 12 and everything seems normal now. Probably a graphics driver changed something. PoE is DEFINITELY not a game which requires your video card to work at 60-80 degrees. Even Last Epoch, with its much superior graphics, is not that heavy.

well most of that comes down to what graphics engine is used and how it's "optimized".....
Yup, switched to DirectX 12 and my temperature is at around 50 degrees with 50 fan speed, as it has always been. No idea why it goes to 80+ with DirectX 11 but it is what it is.

PoE is actually not that badly optimized. The issues seem to be more server-based than computer-based.
you can only switch between vulcan or directX and the game doesn't provide options for different directX versions anymore.

Not correct -->
Default option is DirectX v. 11 and then you have the option of changing to either Vulcan or directX v12 (Beta).

oh, i've been wrong then. sorry

I had the same issue and started to experiment with my settings. Tried the DX12 trick and didn't change anything. Went to switch off settings one by one and found the one that caused my GPU to hit 100c temp almost immediately on loading a map.

If anyone else has the issue, try setting the "Shadows + GI Quality" to LOW. See image for reference.
