Volcanic Fissure-Chain Support/Fork Support
Awakened/Chain/Fork Support gems do not seem to work with Volcanic Fissure projectiles, though I don't see anything on either gem saying it shouldn't. I'm not using anything that would prevent chaining or forking. Maybe I am missing something, like the graphics doesn't show another projectile shooting up, but only another ground impact effect? I've tried to watch for something like that, but it's hard to tell if that is the case. Can anyone confirm that it is or isn't working?

" Pretty sure support gems like that doesn't work on "secondary" effects on skill gems. |

Volcanic Fissure's projectiles do not hit enemies, they hit the ground and deal damage in an AoE. Properties like Pierce, Chain, and Fork don't affect these projectiles because they do not collide with enemies.
For comparison, Rolling Magma has similar projectile mechanics, except for also having the property "Projectiles can Chain when impacting the ground". Molten Strike, which is similar to Volcanic Fissure, was able to access that property with the (currently drop disabled) Wildfire jewel. |

" That seems like a reasonable explanation somewhat in theory, though creeping frost/kinetic blast similarly has projectiles that create areas of effect when they impact the ground and can chain/fork when the projectile hits an enemy within its area of effect. Comparing it to molten strike since the projectiles come from a secondary effect after a melee hit, it makes more sense to why it doesn't work I guess Last edited by Dmon607#7569 on Feb 16, 2023, 9:30:32 AM

" I think this is the answer, thanks |

This has nothing to do with secondary effects. Frost Blades, Tornado Shot and plenty of other skills have secondary projectiles which chain/fork fine. I can't even name a skill from the top of my head whose secondary projectiles don't do that (provided the projectiles are normal).
Creeping Frost is able to chain/fork only on impact with enemies, but not when it reaches the target ground. KBlast's projectile isn't ground targeted. |

" so why do projectiles from volcanic fissure still proc on hit effects if they don't hit enemies? why can they leech? |

"While flying, Volcanic Fissure's projectiles don't hit enemies.* When targeted ground is reached, the projeciles explode, the AoE hits enemies, deals damage, applies on-hit effects, etc. In general case to chain/fork a projectile itself have to collide with enemies (Kblast). Most projectile that fly in an arc don't do that (Winter Orb, Forbidden Rite), though Blazing Salvo's projectiles are able to hit enemies on the fly, before landing, and thus, able to chain/fork. Skill descriptions usually mention the way projectiles end their flight, Volcanic Fissure's one sadly lacks it. * it's ok to say that projectiles don't hit enemies only if we look at their behaviour in detail, but I wouldn't state this out of the context. |
