Tainted Armourer's Scrap Destroys Item?

So using tainted armourer's scrap on a unique item to increase the quality, the item just got destroyed. I couldn't remember this ever happening before and couldn't find any details that it's a possible outcome.

Is this intended and I've dodged the bullet so many times in the past?

Item:
Shaper's Touch Crusader Gloves
Corrupted with +2 AoE Gems
No Enchant

It's weird since I'm almost certain I didnt hit control. I couldn't find it originally because I have a quad with a bunch of random uniques that get dumped into it. Was lost in there.
