Account Bound Items in a game where trading is a big part of it feel like a cheap solution
With the recently added Forbidden Sanctum expansion, the sanctum relics that are the newest way to add power to your character, or to your sanctum 'runs', were made Account-Bound Items.
The idea, I believe, it was that some of those relics can roll really powerful. A really well rolled relic can make a massive difference when playing a sanctum if you're not used to map-layouts, enemy attacks and patterns, traps and so on. Once you learn all of these, it still help a bunch, but I think their impact isn't as massive as they were set out to be, playing well and knowing room layouts, traps and so on matter so much more than socketing your relics in. And in parts I get why these were made account-bound, it's how you make your progression. You can't buy those so you need to play the sanctum, to make your next sanctum run easier. Those I don't mind much being account-bound, still feel bad, but I understand the reason, not entirely equivalent but would be something akin to trading buying/levels for Heist Members from other players. Sanctified relics, however, were made to be socketed in a special slot, like an equipment, which can wildly affect your character. I've seen some nuts Sanctified Relics, and I've seen some really bad ones, and while you don't need to invest skill points to use them, they remind me of cluster jewels. Some can turn a build that feels bad into something more usable. Others can be GG Relics that can help the defining mechanic of your character, and sometimes you drop one that just gives you 35% increased stun treshold. Right now, many sanctified relics are going unused, you drop something that doesn't fit your build, or doesn't make a difference if you equip it or not. Most of them will go sitting in the stash tab collecting dust, or dropped in a random instance and forever deleted. Plus, sanctified relics are ephemeral, they'll last until the end of Forbidden Sanctum and they won't go and affect standard in any way after the league is done. If the worry is about someone spending a lot on something that will dissapear after the league ends, that is something that can be communicate better, I found out sanctified relics are not hitting standard on a random twitter reply in a thread. This isn't a call for making the sanctified relics tradable mid-league. I just disliked the way sanctified relics and were treated for what they are. I dislike the account-bound treatment they got. It would be nice to know the reason why they were treated with so much care that they were locked to you exclusively and unable to trade and maybe reconsider future account-bound stuff. I can't speak for GGG. But they've explained in past reveals that account-bound allows them to make these stronger. When balancing the league, there's a certain amount of "total average power" they are aiming for. When things are account-bound, they can factor in a certain percentage of powerful items collecting dust. When they are NOT account bound, there's a far smaller percent of such things that collect dust (for busted items, that number would be close to 0).
So to use an example, if they want a total of 10,000 busted items in use in the league, there's 2 ways to do it: 1) Account bound and allow say 50,000 of such items to drop, knowing most will not get used. 2) Not account bound and only allow maybe 15,000 such items to drop, know that powerful items you can't use will be sold to someone who can. The first option allows essentially more excitement when one drops since that's the only way to get one. |
