Playing PoE on a Mac
Long-time PoE fan/addict here, and have been on PC for my entire PoE career. It just so happened that I now have to play PoE on a Mac (MacBook Air with M1 chip) at times. I know there's prob a Mac game client somewhere but I am not sure if using it is the best option, since I read this thread talking about other approaches like using virtual machines or installing dual OS https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/48708
I'd appreciate it if anyone could shed some light on how one can play PoE on a Mac, or even explain the current situation. Last bumped on Apr 3, 2024, 10:27:48 AM

POE is playable on a Mac. It's definitely a bit buggier, but the experience is good enough on modern Macbooks and Mac Minis. Most players install directly via Steam, since there isn't a dedicated installer on Mac as far as I know.
That being said, if you have an ancient Macbook Pro (like me with my 2014 Mac), the performance is quite bad. Last edited by arciinus#5883 on Dec 7, 2022, 8:27:15 PM

Not anymore. It seems to no longer be possible to play fullscreen 1080p on a 4k monitor and the result is the game is unplayable when things get busy.

" macOS doesn't scale windows and PoE doesn't support it's own internal resolution on macOS, so you can't "really" play in 2K on a 4K display. Even Windowed, macOS will default to the HiDPI resolution. Either Apple has to revise the windows management system on their OS or GGG has to create its own system to set resolution when in full screen. Like Capcom did with the RE4 Remake. " So what is the play here? It seems like fps is capped at 60 for some odd reason. Last edited by Cannibalism#3750 on Mar 25, 2024, 3:00:18 PM

I emailed support. They got back to me saying they don't provide technical support. So I begged them to just take my findings and pass them onto engineering.
I don't know what else to say. Most of the community laughs and says what did you expect from a Mac. There is no way to talk to GGG developers unless they come here. And so far we haven't seen them express even an interest in trying to hunt this one down. Not sure they care. Which sucks because Apple Silicon can run this and has been doing great till the past few patches. My advice is to take whatever info you have. Logs, settings and take a video and just send it to them begging the same: to pass it to engineering. The thing is, Apple released the GTPK, a transformation layer for DX11 and 12. It works so well that most of my Steam libraries plays in 4K on my Mac Studio. If GGG can use that instead of MoltenVK (which is what I think they are using to bring it to macOS) that would be amazing. For now, I am trying to see if I PoE using it through Whisky (https://github.com/Whisky-App/Whisky). Deliver pain exquisite

Im done being laugh at and wasting my time trying to fix a broken product that i payed for. That is not my job, that is YOUR JOB GGG. You dont post anything about your mac client issues, you don't answer to any post asking for help or fixes. You show a total lack of respect to your MAC customers and you dare take money from these customers without being able to provide a working product or any sign of life.
In my book that is called stealing. Rest assure i will NOT recommend your game to anyone. We paid the same price as windows customer and we just get ....crickets! At least i've learned my lesson to never ever give you money again ..... ...Game uninstalled... Last edited by Moadyb#2199 on Apr 1, 2024, 9:11:45 PM

M1 max
In the last league the performance was excellent. I watched streams on Twitch and my personal experience was better than theirs on juiced maps in terms of performance. A pack or two of mobs in this league and everything goes to hell Last edited by invertercant#2213 on Apr 2, 2024, 1:07:09 PM

I have a M1 Max, playing for quite a while. Game was playable but performance is terrible in 3.24.
I have notice two main situations: going to town when other players have MTX. And Blight encounters. Game goes from 60 fps to 7. It feels terrible. |
