why are bosses with energy shield so tanky

its ridiculous when the map has a mod where % of life becomes a bonus energy shield, its like the energy shields defensives are 90% armor and all res, barely any damage goes through it and if i die the boss regenerates to full. once i go through the shield and dmg his life i deal normal dps again. i straight up brick the map when the boss becomes uber duber with tormented spirits and me having wrath of the cosmos stacks because hes untouchable and dying 5 times wouldnt be a problem if he didint regen to full again. no idea what to do

Well, you could reroll the map?

Playing PoE is all about scaling. Not only can you scale your character to the moon, but you can also scale the content itself. Finding the balance can often take a while. Lots of builds have certain map mods they struggle with - at least until they're pretty min/maxed. An RF will struggle with -max res and/or no regen maps. A non-SLayer pure physical build will struggle with physical reflect maps, at least until he has reflect immunity elsewhere.

You? You struggle with %life as extra ES - and that map mod can be pretty nasty if you don't have the damage. The solution here is, as I said, to reroll those maps until you've gained enough damage to do them. There's no shame in rerolling maps. If the map is corrupted, there's no shame in putting it aside for later either.

I'd like to highlight those 2 things in regards to what Phrazz said. Know your limits. You are obviously trying to force stuff your character can't handle yet and it's probably not just the Life as ES. Posessed bosses can get REALLY nasty depending on what's posessing them while life on ES is a DPS check that gets exponentially harder if the boss has phases or if you die a lot. Scale down your content.

you can reroll map mods, if you were chaos dmg built, you would bypass that energy shield
You could apply some degeneration like ignite to stop their energy shield recharge.
At a reasonable gear level it becomes fine, EXCEPT for instances where the mob/boss disappears or is immune to damage, meaning they regen all ES and there is nothing you can do about it.

It would be nice for QoL if a mob going immune also stopped all ES generation.

most monsters have a base boost to defensive stats so that 40% bonus es is more like 100% or more of their life pool

more hidden bonus gifts from ggg =D
