Attack Damage Family Tree
Hi, I'm trying to figure out the attack damage classification as to better understand which attack boost to get. Could anyone help me? As far as I understand, the structure is somewhat below:
Attack Damage 1. Physical Damage 1.1 Physical Damage on Hits 1.2 Physical Damage over Time (Bleeding) 2. Elemental Damage (Fire/Cold/Lightening) 2.1 Elemental Damage on Hits 2.2 Elemental Damage over Time (Burning) 2.3 Elemental Damage with Ailments (Damage + Ignite/Chill/Shock) 3. Chaos Damage 3.1 Chaos Damage on Hits 3.2 Chaos Damage over Time 3.3 Poison Not sure if those are correct. Enlightments are appreciated. I'm not really sure what your question is here, but some notes about your breakdowns of damage types:
Spell Hits and Attack Hits are distinct and can be buffed separately; this applies for all types of damage. Cold DoT and Lightning DoT both exist, but are uncommon. For example, Wintertide Brand deals Cold DoT, and Rare monsters with the Mana Siphoner mod deal lightning damage over time. I believe that the Eater of Worlds also can deal Lightning DoT. Burning is both Elemental DoT and an Elemental Ailment, so it benefits from bonuses in both categories. Poison is a specific ailment, which is a type of Chaos Damage over time. It isn't the only form of Chaos DoT: Toxic Rain and Plague Bearer both deal Chaos DoT without applying poison. The stats you want to look for are heavily dependent on both the kind of damage you are doing and the way you apply it; most (but not all) attack based builds are also invested in crit chance and crit multiplier. As a general rule, you wan to focus on improving the particular kind of damage your main skills deal (and making sure that they deal the same kind of damage), while ignoring or sacrificing bonuses to other damage types. |

I was confused, started from cases:
1) If a jewel provide "20% increased damage", will it boost all type of damage? 2) If a jewel provide "20% increased attack damage", will it only boost damage from all attack but not from spell? 3) If a jewel provide "20% increased attack damage with ailments", will it only boost damage from attack with ailments but not damage from attack hits? |

If you are asking whether a bonus that's listed higher will always provide to the thing you listed under it, the answer is yes.
There is one exception: Attack Damage. Attack Damage is not just physical, can also be elemental. The 3 Physical lines you listed apply to both attacks and spells. |

" Is this just pedantry? sure, the name of the ailment is actually "Ignite", but the effect it applies is called "Burn". Ignite damage is directly boosted by both Ailment Damage and DoT Modifiers (as a type of applicable Damage) See https://www.poewiki.net/wiki/Ignite#Mechanics and https://www.poewiki.net/wiki/Ailment#Application_by_damage EDIT: forgot to embed my urls Last edited by BioSpec#3235 on Oct 5, 2022, 4:36:38 PM

" 1) Yes (https://www.poewiki.net/wiki/Damage), with the exception of reflected damage that you deal to enemies, such as with Lycosidae (citation needed) 2) Yes. (https://www.poewiki.net/wiki/Damage) 3) As far as I know, that specific modifier doesn't exist in PoE (as you write it). However, the modifier "Damage with Hits and Ailments" exists, and does exactly what it says. Hits can be applied by both Spells and Attacks (Attack Hits, Spell Hits) in more detail, the phrase "Attack Damage with Ailments" doesn't make very much sense given how we know damage works in PoE: Attack Damage can Cause Ailments, but Ailment Damage is not a subset of Attack Damage. Correction: I'm dumb, and forgot how Lycosidae works. Regardless, I'm not sure if Reflected Damage is increased by global "% Increased Damage". See Bramblejack for an item that actually deals Reflected Damage.

" Ignite - Elemental Ailment. Burning from ignite will be boosted by Ailment Damage. Burning refers to any fire damage over time effect. Burning damage is a synonym for fire damage over time; all burning damage is fire damage over time, and vice versa. There are several sources of burning, not only ignite. https://www.poewiki.net/wiki/Burning Last edited by seaman#4993 on Oct 5, 2022, 5:03:04 PM

Thanks for the enlightments. These made better understanding to me.
If I rely on attack (not spell), should I search for "20% increased damage" or "20% increased attack damage"? My weapon has physical, fire, cold, lightening damage added in it. |
