Crowdfunded Servers for Old Leagues

although their server design is pretty complicated with instance servers, multiple database shards, global servers and local game servers, there would be a way to run it all on one linux machine.

problem is, releasing server side code (even old one) would allow people to learn about weaknesses in their code and attack the real game. they would be crazy to allow that.

i really understand the desire to correct old mistakes and have fun with a old league which allowed you to easily beat the content but the expectation to have the same experience with a new league is what makes people come back.

That's a very popular excuse among SaaS devs, and that's all that it is. Hiding your bad security practices isn't a good security practice. If your old software exposes attack vectors in your new software, it's your own lazy-ass fault.

Stop letting devs tell you things just can't be as good as they used to be. Making things as good as they used to be has a lower profit margin, that's all they really mean. Fuck their Lambos.

i'm a fan of open source and also use it alot.

but the basic principle of open source security is, that your open code is only getting more secure if you got more people looking though it to fix design flaws than you got people looking into it to find abuse cases.

the source code for poe servers would have zero, nada, no developers looking though it to help ggg finding bugs.

also, the server architecture of poe was designed by jonathan, certainly got improved by their "3 man"? team doing server side stuff but it certainly got far less attention than it would have got if it's been made by blizzard or some other gaming giant.

A "fan of open source" should be well aware of the numerous counterexamples to this claim. Games older than I am still live. People will protect what they love. I'm trying to do that right now.

maybe?, i just wrote my very own opinion.
the elephant in the room is, that the source code isn't owned by ggg and with the global conflicts luring on the already red horizon, it's probably not worth asking 10c to open their assets to the western world.

Today I learned that saying "crappy security in a video game will not affect geopolitics" is "incendiary and political" if you happen to name any countries when you do it.

By the Goddess, this is Justice. I am 200% behind such an initiative. As for security, let GGG make and maintain them like Blizzard made classic wow - of course we cant expect them to give random people their code.

I think one of the problems here would be people expecting all the QoL that's been added to be in the version they played (and there has been a lot of QoL added despite what people say). Would you wanna play a summoner in a league before permanent spectres, play without map/currency tabs, trade without public stash tabs, play a version where desync was a thing? Probably not

The amount of work this would take is immense despite what someone whose development knowledge doesn't really extend past reading C++ For Dummies might think.

i was about to respond to that post but deemed it not worth it cause they would delete it for being political.

If I was given a choice between different versions to play, I'd probably try out several to see which one offered the most fun for me despite losing QoL the further back we go. I would probably end up favouring different versions for different builds.

It's all a moot point anyway, though. This runaway train will only ever move in one direction: More RNG
Maybe next league will include a chance that your character class changes when levelling because deterministic progress is bad and getting that +1 skill point shouldn't happen without a touch of anxiety.
Let each player choose which version of PoE to play:
