Doryani's Prototype mechanic does not work on incoming damage from some spells

Sadly this game is a mess, it has so many janky mechanics that they behave sorta like a forest after a destructive storm. You remove one tree and all hell breaks lose, you basically play a game of jackstraws.

The only way to circumvent this terrible armor's downside is to use a combination of Lethal Pride timeless jewel and Mahutoxil Machination shield from Trialmaster boss. This way you'll achieve 100% conversion on lightning damage (from any source) into something else and won't have to deal with messy armor mitigation mechanics.

Sadly this shield is expensive and comes with many other keystones that aren't beneficial and make gameplay clunkier on an ES based character.
I don't know about the Lightning Nova but I believe Lightning Mirages leave a dot when they explode. Prototype only makes armour protect you from hits. So anything that deals dot damage with lightning will completely shred you.
If i remember correctly lighnting mirages have a 0.2 sec cooldwown before exploding, but if you play the game and run away from one it persists far longer. Maybe you Stacked multiple mirages by moving away and then you got shotgunned.

But i feel you - if it gets hectic you cant tell, if an enemy even has mirages or not until you are dead.
It could be a dot as someone said.

But also big lightning hits will chunk through that armour.

On Path of Damage, a 13k lightning hit would kill you even with 280k armour. Do mirages do that much? I dont think so. Maybe with dangerous map mods. It would only hit a player with 75% resists for 3250, but it hits you for 4122 which is more than your hp without MS.

But if you can redirect even half to another element (talisman, the unique shield, timeless jewel), that becomes only 1225 damage.

That could be it? But I think the mirages, although dangerous, dont hit THAT hard, unless maybe they come from an Archnemesis mob that also has several other AN mods than multiply damage and those effect the mirage.

Lightning mirages will do 13k base I'd expect, certainly 2k on 80 res is pretty common which is ~10k its not that hard to bump up from there and i'm sure they can crit.

And yes Doryani's has a fairly insane downside but its also monumentally busted which is why you are all trying to use it, if anything GGG shouldn't let players cut out its downside it just becomes insanely strong when you no longer have to deal with the negatives.

Its fun to gear for and optimise though it would be a shame to lose it but this is a great example of a problem item in design terms, its too good and too frustrating both.

Yeah, then no real mystery, just the way armour interacts with heavy damage (it becomes a lot less useful).

Even if this slightly overestimates it, some common map mods would easily explain the increase.
Answer for all, who intrested in wearing this body armour:

as mentioned earlier, armor does not protect well from large blows. Therefore, do not look at the values in 90% of physical reduction.

I played tank build with this body armor and here are my findings:
less than 300k armor - oneshots from any more or less large lightning hits.

Around 300k - almost 100% one-shots from Lightning Mirage, Lightning Nova Spell casted from Invulnerable Totems and Sentinel traps (Unending Storm) in Lab

To comfortably play in prototype and not be afraid of lightning damage, you need around 1 million armor.

So if you are not an armor stacker - you are 100% glass canon.
But if u take around 1 million armor (need to have mageblood) - you still have a trouble with killing some uber bosses like maven and shaper. And of course mana burn still here.

All things considered, I would not recommend this armor for anyone. regardless of the damage it provides. And even more so, do not make a tank build with her

Doryani's Prototype is 100% busted and it is just fair that you need heavy investment to def when it is pretty simple to hit -200% res (even more so with Kalandra).

If you check some builds you'll see that many non glass cannon versions of DP play around "lightning damage taken as X". Due to how armour mitigates damage, having 50% lightning dam taken as other will reduce damage taken by more than half.

Some time before you had to go Divine Flesh to do that, but now you can even hit -200% lightning resistance alongside with Tempered by War thanks to GG Kalandra jewelry/Melding.
AND, you can stack both Tempered by War and Divine Flesh with Mahuxotl's Machination, or convert 100% to fire with Dawnbreaker + Sublime Vision (purity of fire).

So there are tons of viable options for Doryani's Prototype

It's probably intentional that everything in poe is an experiment and 'prototypers' would only fit the bill.
