Can we make Thorns/Physical Reflect viable?

biggest problem i see:
reflect build is basically the most passive build you can possibly create in an arpg. GGG has actively nerfed and avoided any form of passive gameplay for YEARS. It's part of the reason minions get nerfed so much and so often. It's the reason for the gladiator gutting. It's the reason for RF changes. etc. They as a company and as a game prefer to avoid introducing "passive" skills or builds. There were, youtube Gone AFK series of builds from the past. They were very effective, too effective and were bot fodder. The problem is if there is a passive build like that, botters use them.

" CWDT, CoC, and walking simulators have been a thing for a very long time. I suppose this would be similar in a way, yet it still requires a major amount of investment and active gameplay. That's why an active skill gem and weapon that synergizes should be introduced. I don't see thorns being an issue for bots. That's an issue in itself that is completely separate issue from having a viable thorns build. Another suggestion I have is to maybe make chain hook deliver a large percentage of damage absorbed as physical AOE thorns/reflected damage upon reaching full Rage, similar to Molten Shell. |

" Yes, you are absolutely right, that's what I said in my comment. But the next part is what was important: they are CONSTANTLY nerfed. RF requires more of an active playstyle now due to nerfs to it's original autoplay design. CWDT used to actually be a viable way to deal damage, now it is ONLY used for supports. CoC is an active playstyle, and therefore irrelevant. But still that was also nerfed a huge amount because of it's automated nature. Things like autobombers and other auto-builds basically don't exist in a form that can go beyond yellow maps in today's PoE The devs do not like passive play. Thorns, by it's very definition and function, is a passive effect. It requires you to get hit by enemies, and then auto damages them in return. There is zero interaction from the player. It is THIS that makes me think GGG will never even consider thorns, or spend valuable resources trying to make it "work": it already starts from a position they do not want in the game. If they were to do all that you said, and link it to other skills or make it more "active", then is it really thorns at that point? We already have the 3 counterattack skills in the game (which were nerfed thanks to gladiator nerfs and cooldown shenanigans), so sure maybe we could use MORE counterattack-type skills but that really isn't "thorns". |

" I think they should revamp both counterattacks and thorns, obviously. They made some pretty significant changes to all but one of thorns items in the game. Why would they do that if they were completely against the idea of thorns? Thousand Teeth Temu and Bramblejack got some pretty hefty buffs. The issue is the mechanics of thorns/reflected physical. It requires a pretty hefty amount of investment and can't just be tossed on any ol character to make it work. It seems they wanted that playstyle to be better than its previous state, but they didn't really think it through. It IS the reflection league after all. Let's get it! |
