VPN and Unlock Code

I cannot seem to connect to this game from my laptop and private network UNLESS I turn on VPN. However, when I do that it is now requiring me to enter an unlock code ever time I log in.

What is the deal?

I never needed a VPN when I started playing this game so is this something to do with Windows? I am in a location where there is a server in my state ...

Every time you try to login and have a new IP, the account protection system is activated and you need to do a MFA login = use the e-mail unlock code.
This is per game design of GGG and fits the use of VPN.

Well why you can no longer play PoE unless you use PoE can be because the following -->
- Windows firewall / windows security program blocking traffic.
- Firewall / problem in your router/modem.
- Your ISP is interfering with traffic / using a proxy.
- The DNS server you are using have a problem.

Thanks for your help. Now I know why I couldn't connect to the game. I guess if the game admins used a static residential proxy instead, we wouldn't have such problems with the interfered traffic. As far as I know, it's better to use a proxy than VPN. Proxies change your IP, so your activity won't get tracked. At least, my friend told me so. Anyway, thanks a lot for your help.
