i agree fully to that melee is lacking in defences. mechanically melee will always be weaker than range as they have to have higher defenses if they want to be in the enemy's face (which is what melee is supposed to do).

but that said, it's a separate issue.

as i've pointed out a few times, marauder/duelist nodes DO need a rework as they are way too specialized. they dont need a buff necessarily, but they need to be reworked. remove the word "physical" so that any melee attacks would scale appropriately. also make sure that it's paired with ailment damage.
