Forbidden flame/flesh bastion of elements not working

Hi, I just bought a forbidden flame and forbidden flesh each with bastion of elements (elementalist node that gives primal aegis) to use on my bane occultist. I equipped both jewels and nothing happened. I do not get a visual buff, I do not get an icon on my buff bar, and I take full elemental damage from hits.

I'm playing a witch that doesn't have it allocated already so it should work. I've tried putting the jewels in normal sockets or cluster jewel sockets and logging out/in. I tested that I am not recieving the benefits by going to the beacon (act 6 zone) with those elementals that shoot frost orbs to test. I take damage from it so the aegis isn't just invisible - it just doesn't work.
