Why does Added Cold Damage and Added Fire Damage Behave very differently?
|
Why does Added Cold Damage Support provide (4-169) to (6-254) added Cold Damage, while Added Fire Damage Support says "gain (25-44)% of Physical Damage as Extra Fire Damage" ? I am confused as to why one would give added flat damage and one would give a portion of your physical damage as extra fire damage. Does not compute. Thx!

physical to fire conversion is the most common one

" Good to know. But they have a gem called Physical to Lightning. Why wouldn't they call Added Fire Damage, Physical to Fire since that is they way it actually behaves? Is this some sort of weird legacy thing? I bet anyone that adds Added Fire Damage to their Fire Trap is a sad. |

They don't behave the same. "converted to" outright replaces one damage type with another. "added as" and "extra" leave the original damage type intact.

" Okay, good point re Physical to Lightning vs Added Fire Damage, I didn't catch that. It still doesn't answer my original question of why Added Fire Damage Support behaves differently than all the other Added [Damage Type] Damage Supports. |

There used to be more of such asymmetries, but many of them have been "smoothed out", so to speak. You could think of this support gem as a remnant from that time.
Simply put, it was probably made that way because that would be more useful for the characters that can use it. It is a strength based gem, and most strength based characters would scale physical damage, so it makes more sense for the gem to scale with physical damage. The intelligence and dexterity gems however do not have their playstyles locked to damage types and are thus available for any type of skill. |

Honestly theres nothing wierd about it other then your expectation that all the "added x damage" supports should work identically.
These 2 gems are simply ment for differend usecase same way that the damage adding auras are and intrestingly hatred an anger work the opposite way from their respective damage types support gems, so you get flat fire damage and phys damage as cold. "An it harm none, do what you will"

" Thank you DER_PSYCHOPATH that line of reasoning makes sense. |
|
" Just trying to understand what I perceive as oddities when I run into them. Like why someone running RT would also run War Banner attached to Generosity support. Seems strange on the face of it, but not when you understand what Generosity does and doesn't do to War Banner when you have no need to care about accuracy. Thanks for pointing out how Hatred and Anger behave in the opposite manner of their Added Cold/Fire Damage Support gems. |

In addition to what the psycho mentioned, restricting how Ignite is applied and scaled was also a likely factor in their reasoning for having Added Fire work the way it does. It's not nearly as relevant now as it was in the old days, but it still matters to some extent.
