Unnatural Instinct: Allocated Small Passives grant nothing

Just as the title says, however when I allocate early let's say 10 strength, this 10 strength is actually -10 instead of 0, I lose damage and Max HP, same with dexterity.

Yes 10 - 10 = 0, but then I should not get negative effects from the node, should I?

I think I misunderstood, so I did not have the node allocated thus, I got the bonus, but when I allocated it, I actually lost that bonus.
