maybe they dont know where to put such a timer since the timer isnt running as long as you are in the area and you cant crtl to open a new area for maps etc

a timer in the map open menu where you pick zana mods could be a good option,it wouldnt even need much space since you can only have 1 area open from it anyway

Perhaps an optional progress bar over the portal, like health bars over enemies? Then, just a glance would give you a decent idea of how much "life" your portal (i.e., the instance) has left. =^[.]^=
