There's an undocumented recipe of 6 for 3 of the same tier, and the 3 are all of the same base type instead of random bases. By shoving so many in at once, that recipe is going to be involved for at least some of the output. I'm not sure how many others are aware of it, but I've been aware of it for some time. I'm just lazy to update the wiki.
Edit: And keep in mind there could be other undocumented recipes involved as well. These things are discovered by players after all. The 6 for 3 is just the only one I happen to know of, but there are probably more tiers (it's just not a documented function on the wiki). I have a pretty good sense of humor. I'm not German. 4 for 2, 8 for 4, and 10 for 5 also appear to give out the same base type instead of randoms for each recipe done in exactly those amounts. But I don't have enough of the same base types to start with anymore to test the different combinations thoroughly and see if they hold true. Multiples of 2 per turn-in to get the same base seems to be the key at any rate.
As for how the vendors actually decide which combinations to perform when you drop in 60 scarabs at once, who knows? There are a couple other combining recipes not on the wiki that can produce some unexpected results, and the logic the game uses to produce them isn't very obvious. There's no bug at any rate.
