How about Easy Mode instead of Hard Mode?

The biggest downside of any extra modes is that players from each mode would be clammoring for attention from the developers. We already get that with SSF v. normals. Having extra modes on top of that would beg the question "who is the game being developed for?"
Market segmentation is usually a successful strategy getting and retaining customers. To do so successfully a company needs to invest in its product development resources.

Two obvious examples are the auto industry and smart phone companies.

this would be a no brainer money maker for GGG but they will probably go ahead with hardmode just to please the streamers

I actually wonder who watch streamers more, casual folks or nolife-ing folks? GGG cares about MTX sales. Streamers care about view numbers.

If only hardcore people watching streamers then fine. But if the majority of those views come from casuals, those streamers will sing a different song once their views are plummeted. In fact, if no one wants to watch them play league they have to play something else.
Hrd mode is not even for streamers. They will jump on it and play a little, since its new, but I doubt anyone will stay there full time.
You lost me at premium.. what the fuck mate..
Easy mode or 3.13 legacy mode would be fantastic! I'm ready to pay a monthly fee to play it, lul
3.13 Was the best league ever!
3.18 Rest in peace my beloved recombinators, I'm gonna miss you...
I totally support this idea. I find the death penalty with the constant slow xp grind at higher levels to be infuriating. There are still so many unanticipated one shots lo these many years later.

And a counter example is the NFL vs that other league that keeps trying to start up but no one cares about.
Football is a spectator sport. How does that apply to this game?
GGG already has some player segmentation:

Standard
SSF
HC
Quarterly Leagues

The problem is that there are multiple player segments within the quarterly leagues and several of those feel very under served and over time have become pissed off because there does not seem to be a "product" for them to "buy". In addition, Standard has been afflicted with the same issues and is no longer a good refuge.

My sense is that GGG is afraid to segment any more because it will interfere with their vision of trade and the game economy. Their need/desire for their vision for trade to not change keeps them from improving the game for many players. A retro/legacy league choice that embraced Harvest would take too many players away from the league focus and mess up the "economy".

Of course, an alternate view is that they are just marking time until POE2 is ready and throwing crap at the walls to see what sticks and testing stuff for the 2.0. They cannot say that out loud though for fear folks would walk until 2.0 is ready.

Whatever the situation, I think they are afraid to let players know the truth.

Not at all the same. Market segmentation through product differentiation is very different. It is GM with 5 different model lines at varied price points customer bases. It is five different cell phones with different features and prices and each one designed to attract a particular kind of customer. In both cases the customer experience is designed to be different.

My iPhone SE is a better match for what I want out of a phone than the iPhone 13 pro. Successful companies are able to match a users expected/desired experience to a product they make available.
