Esh nova is very much telegraphed, you just need to walk out of range, doesnt require a specifically very tanky build. Also i tanked esh nova a few times on some of the tanky toons i believe, if anything maybe he critted you.

just life and res are not enough anymore, either need spell block of suppression. Suppression is very easy to get though, with it being able to roll both as affixes on eva or ar/eva gear as well as the eldritch implicits.
