How to tell "Spell" from "Attack" for boss abilities?

SADLY we have 0 way to SEE if its attack or spell

only search/ask... poe wiki/poedb/etc

you can fairly tell by having high dodge and low spell dodge or vice versa

Just it became harder in 3.16 when they removed dodge

So that you need to test it with high evasion and low "new spell dodge" character and then another with reverse condition

Alternatively, high attack block and low spell block, and vice versa

it doesnt matter if you dont know which one it is

theres a group of abilities that are clear 1 shots that you need to be aware of and relying on dodge for them is stupid to begin with

shit like eva/dodge is something that you use to conveniently have easier time mapping, not facetanking signature boss attacks


I stopped doing end bosses in this game a long time ago.
No matter how much time you spend making an immortal or 100 million dps build, it doesn't matter, you'll be killed so you didn't move in a split second.

I hate that part of the game.
If you dont wanna look it up outside of the game there is a rule of thumb.

If its T16 guardian/elder guardians/sirus/maven or 100% delirious juiced with like breach/beyond

chances go towards 100% that you will be confronted with mostly spell based elemental damage.
just one shot for all 6 portals for area lvl 84 Baran, which only has AOE map mod

The game just out right fucked up on balance the monster dps anyway and no way you can manually dodge it by moving your character

high dodge or high block or any other way to tank phy / ele damage is a long meta of the game. Too terrible that dodge as a layer of defense is removed and then evasion has "entropy" (which GGG actually means deterministically to be hit instead of real world entropy in chemistry/thermodynamic) and we know nothing yet on "new spell dodge"

this is mostly right, most things have a phys component and phys is the most common damage type it shouldn't be neglected.

Like for most bosses now if it looks like fire its probably phys 75% converted to fire, if it looks like lightning its phys converted 75% to lightning.

This allows armour to mitigate it to some degree (as we reduce the converted portion by resists anyway) but tends to not do much for evade because everything is a spell contributing to their modern defence problems.
When the boss says "Meka leka parley VOO!" beforehand, you know it's a spell. Otherwise, it's an attack. Unless it's offscreen then it's a spell that contains an attack at close range. I.e. a die beam that when it gets close to your face, creates two giant bony fingers in a "V" configuration to poke out your eyes.

evasion is better than attack dodge and entropy is one of the reasons its better than dodge.
