Anyone else plays the game casually?
|
I started playing when the game was in open beta, Feb 1, 2013. I played most of the leagues, but PoE was never my main game, I only play each league from couple of days to 2 weeks tops. I never traded in my life, the thought of trading in this game terrifies me, because I'm a noob at it and never done it. I also don't really want to trade - I feel better with items I got myself, I only played SSF the last couple of years.
I almost exclusively play the same build - physical damage necromancer. I follow very vaguely a guide I saw a long time ago, I don't like being told what to do. I managed to get to level 94 one season, but I experienced very little of the endgame. I never done the shaper and elder when they were the endgame bosses, not just uber, not even the normal version, haven't killed them since as well. After the endgame change, I only once got to fight Sirus, but didn't manage to kill him. I only killed normal Atziri, a couple of the breach bosses, Syndicate endboss and eternal lab. At the fragments tab, I don't even know what they are used for, except the ones to fight Atziri. I wanted to stop playing until PoE 2, but I saw Preach playing/streaming it, and I started playing this league as well, I really like the guy, have been following him for ~10 years. So are there others like me? I only see some super hardcore players when I check the forums. Last edited by Fripp#0477 on Sep 5, 2021, 8:03:07 AM Last bumped on Sep 5, 2021, 1:23:57 PM

Well i play 120-150 hours each league, 200 tops, does that count as casual?

I see myself as a fairly casual player. I have played PoE for A LONG time, and put in maybe 20 hours a week. I usually beat Sirus 8 every league, but I've never beaten Maven or done T19 Delirium maps, as well as very deep delves. Totally OK with being locked out from the most difficult content as a casual, that's the right way to scale a game marketing itselfs as a "hardcore experience".
So I'm probably not like you. I seek knowledge. If I ever find something in game I do not understand or know what is, I seek that knowledge - and find out what it is. And I never play the same build for more than one league. I'm in it for the journey of a new league. If I played the same shit as last league, it would be more or less the same journey. PoE is a game of knowledge. You're allowed - as a casual player too - to seek that knowledge. It's not that terrifying. I would suggest trying a new build, and learn everything you can learn from your next play-through. You can learn a lot be trying different things. Don't be afraid to try :) If you need any leveling uniques or other stuff for your next play-through, just hook me up, and I'll throw some shit your way. What's the worst that can happen? Build failing? Can be a fun experience still :) Bring me some coffee and I'll bring you a smile.

" I don't seek knowledge, I just want to kill some mobs. I tried other builds in the past, I think I got to maps with a smite build when smite was added to the game, but now when I try a different build, I get bored with it in Act 3, and go back to necromancer. I'm OK with playing with others in MMOs, but in other games like PoE, I get so uncomfortable and stressed, that I feel a physical pain in my chest. I'd rather not have that. I'm also too old for new friends (I'm 41). So thanks for the offer, but I just can't deal with it. |

I became a casual 2 leagues ago when i moved to sc, never thought it would happen but it's nice

Only necros can do this.
Other builds have a high risk of destroying their wrists so they play 2 weeks max from a new league start usually. Then leave for good health. Say thanks for clicker nature of PoE. Except there also versions. We were playing casually with friends up to 3.13. Its the last long played version. Now they barely touch PoE, because fun not found. And I still here for a significantly lower game time. Used it to speedrace to 36 on last 2 leagues, then go play forums occasionally, when playing other games. More fun this way xD Last edited by DarkJen#6961 on Sep 5, 2021, 9:28:49 AM

" Yep, that's not unlike how I play. Maybe 10-12 hours/week of actual play, snatched when I can get some undisturbed time. Don't see or expect to see most end-game bosses, and rarely accumulate enough of any splinters to do whatever it is they do. As for trading, I've done it once, by accident (someone asked for a stack of IIRC whetstones in town, I provided, and he put a stack of something else in as payment - alchs? - which I wasn't expecting.). Like you, if I don't see it drop, it doesn't count. Still play in groups in-guild, though. We'll run biweekly sessions, only a couple of hours each, targeting red maps and maybe a few minor bosses by season end. No trading outside group, but drops shared and passed to the most suitable. That's still fun, and if you're in a guild or have friends who play I recommend it. And I do try plenty of builds: often played necro, because D2, but far more often than not something else. Main complaint is that so much of the top tiers are unplayable if you don't trade or play multiple hours daily, because it's "balanced" around items where even the bases/orbs don't drop from anything you can kill with a 5L and no OTT double-influenced items. And such builds find anything else trivial. So I'd love it if drops could be resolved and/or the game balanced to the point where you'd run with basically dropped gear... yes, I likely will be trying masochist mode. EDIT: also, I wish I was only 41, but no way that's too old to make friends. You're (slightly) closer to my older children's ages than to mine... I was over 41 when I started playing PoE. Looking for a mature guild to play with? http://www.guildmedieval.com Courtesy, Integrity, Fair Play. I understand this is a role playing game, but I don't think the best role to play should be shopkeeper. - AlteraxPoe Last edited by Varana#3018 on Sep 5, 2021, 10:27:12 AM

" Almost at your age. Wasn't looking to be your friend, just wanted to help you out. But here it is: If you actually get physical pain from PoE, and you have no interest in seeking knowledge about how to enjoy the game more, I seriously think you should move on. You and PoE seem like an even more unhealthy relationship that regular gaming-relationships. Play something you enjoy :) Bring me some coffee and I'll bring you a smile.

You are not alone:) I only play 1~2 characters each league and the average play time is around 100~150 hours. I never reach some endgame bosses like maven.
I have a level 100 character, I just checked the play time: 13 days. which is 300 hours. This should be my most devoted character in all time. I also mainly play physical minion necromancer. Because this seems to be one of the only viable builds in HCSSF: equipment are cheap, no need to trade, all items go defense and still reach 100M damage easily. Most importantly you dont need to keep hitting mouse button/keyboard. |

I don't remember when I haven't played this game casually. In contrary about what the niotion is, PoE is a very good game for casuals.
