What is "Dynamic resolution factor" in config file?

I play on a Mac and I'm not sure it does anything. I've tried setting it to fixed and turning it all the way up, but it looks the same to me. I'm guessing it adjusts the resolution to factors between standard and retina. Like I said though, I can't see a difference.
