I couldn't agree more. I find the gem-based skills and skill support system to be a real advancement in the genre.

First there is the issue of determining how different types of gems gain experience in a fair and balanced manner (imagine the forums screaming about unfair advantages and nerfs because they perceive their favorite spell gem as leveling slower than some melee gem). Second, it essentially eliminates any possibility that an experienced character will experiment with a different set of skills or use new skill gems as they are introduced. Third, if a particular gem type is modified for game balance, players that rely on that gem have little recourse. They are now gimped or forced to grind simply to level a different gem type.

In short - I believe GGG got this one exactly right.
