Concentrated effect + Fireball

I expected it to work, since Fireball is considered AoE, but apperently it does not. So I was thinking, if I increase Fireball's Aoe radius past 30%, will it eventually work? 69%more area damage is such a huge boost..

Concentrated effect is working with fireball. Unfortunatly, it will not update the fireball tool tip dps. Fireball tool tip dps is the dps of the projectile, the AoE comes from the fireball exploding. Fireball explosion does the same damage as the projectile and then incorporates all your aoe modifiers.

The fireball projectile is not AoE damage, and if it pierces, forks, or chains, it will not do AoE damage until explodes. Therefore the tool tip damage does not reflect AoE damage modifiers. But they do apply once the fireball explodes (after it forks, the last chain, or when it doesnt pierce).

If you do have fork, or chain or pierce on your fireball, and a good +radius, you can force your fireball to blow up in the first rank of mobs by putting up a frost wall and hitting the frostwall with your fireballs, it will hit mobs on the otherside of the wall ^^.

Oh very nice thanks! So fireball hits the first target dealing projectile damage and damages the nearby monsters with an AoE.. I think I'll use conc effect for Fire trap/Molten shell at this point, but thank you for the info!

The only time fireball does not do AoE damage is when it pierces, chains or forks. As it passes through a mob, it does not explode, and only explodes if it doesnt pass through the mob.

When you hit a mob and the fireball does not fork, chain or pierce, the fireball does AoE damage...to all the mobs hit, even the mob the fireball hits.

Concentrated effect work very very well with fireball, especially with multi-projectiles, as the mobs can get shotgunned by several concentrated effect explosions. Conc. effects + LMP + Fork + fireball does room clearing type damage when you get the angles right, especially in tight narrow corridors and small rooms.

Oh.. but what's the basic damage of the AoE explosion? And is it efficient also vs single-target?

Ya, very efficient vs single-target, especially with multiple projectiles.

You figure your actual damage by applying your AoE damage boosts to your calculations.

The tool tip dps doesnt use any +area dmg bonuses.

So if you have the witch notable that adds increased 8% area damage, a +10%spell dmg node, and +50%spelldmg on gear and concentrated effect at 50%more aoe dmg for example it would be:

(base fireball dmg (BFD)+(BFD * .10(sp node)+ BFD * .50 (sp gear) +BFD * .08 (aoe inc)) * 1.50 (concentrated Effect) <- multiplicative modifier

where your tool tip dps will just show:

BFD + (BFD * .10(sp node) + BFD * .50 (sp Gear))

Of course the real calculations also include crit chance, crit modifier, cast speed, elemental damage nodes, resist penetration among others. The jist of my example is that anything specifically increasing fireball AOE damage is not listed on the tool tip. But it still applies, and will only make fireball do more damage when exploding.

For all intents and purposes to simplify hw much damage your fireball deals with concentrated effects, just multiply your tool tip dps by your concentratrated effect modifier.

So at level 1 concentrated effect gem you would do:

tool tip dps * 1.50
