It's isometroid. If you zoom out enough, you can play metroid *<:^)

The reason it's not technically isometric is that it accounts for perspective and the effects of distance when rendering relative sizes of objects.

Top-down (actual 90 degrees up in the air looking straight down) is very disorienting to some players, especially within games that normally have 3D or pseudo-3D assets.

Modders of Starcraft and Age of Empires games may be familiar with the modpacks and scenario editors that let you freecam in edit mode to line up buildings, check LOS and range rings on ranged units, and conceal objectives. This is where top-down is very useful, but once you play through the scenario, you do NOT want it because units and pathing often only appear to one side of the building/checkpoint.

Because of the functional differences between top-down and isometric/oid w/r/t interacting with units, poe seems solidly in the isometroid camp.

Much like "algorithm" which is actually derived from the family name of an Arabian mathematician Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi also know as the Father of algebra, which is as well, the word algebra was derived from the name of one of his books "al-jabr"
