CI is usually a stepping-stone to LL from a gearing and investment perspective. CI is generally tankier but lower damage than LL.

LL does not just mean having a build without much life, it specifically means keeping your health under 35% at all times to activate the Pain Attunement keystone for 30% more spell damage. You go LL for the damage boost, CI has better survivability.

LL is almost always accomplished with Shavronne's Wrappings unique chest and blood magic. Blood magic is usually obtained from the unique shield Prism Guardian, which not only applies blood magic to any socketed spells but also reduces their mana (converted to health by blood magic) reservation.

The basic LL concept is thus:
Shavronne's wrappings to ensure no chaos damage bypasses your energy shield. This is mandatory, you will die otherwise. CI is incompatible with LL.

Auras socketed in a prism guardian to reduce your health below 35% and activate the Pain Attunement keystone.

You now have 30% more damage, and extra room for more auras on your real manapool for even more damage. The cost is the massive amount of ES you'd be able to obtain from a rare non-unique ES chest and a rare non-unique ES shield.

CI is easier.
Get a shield with recover ES on block, get a Vaal Regalia chest with a TON of ES and high quality. You are now extremely tanky.
For the traps, you can also work on your physical mitigation. Depending on your build, options might include fortify, endurance charges, basalt flask, chaos golem, phys damage taken as elemental, etc.
