cold dot occultist is a fairly safe league starter, even for SSF.
unique wise it wants the cold DOT helm sometimes which is fairly common, even then its not a mandatory item. |

Safest? Hell no.
They are ok but their defenses are evasion based which means eventually you will die. You want armor, fortify defenses, like champion (although nerfed now) and jugg. |

" theres more than one way to play the game. i personally cannot stand playing champion or any left side no matter how "defensive" they're claimed to be. it doesn't suite me, and i cannot stop myself from dying anytime i make a character that takes damage at everything thrown at it. it feels absolutely fucking terrible, to me. that being said, i'd say the safest option come 3.13 would be Caustic Arrow Raider. Here is a great build guide for it (HC viable BTW) https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/2077932 Raider getting a very solid buff. already was the most defensive ascendancy in the game FOR ITS INVESTMENT, being able to very easily evade cap (95%) and massive dodge for very little passive point investment. Now raider gets even more evade and even more dodge and permanent phasing/onslaught, removing the situational element to raiders evade cap. its completely insane and you will feel like a god. in late game when you're able to stack kintsugi, wind dancer, and other such things, with a decent life pool of 6500+ hp, you'll be able to take a hit too, when you eventually do get hit. |

i started heist with a PF toxic rain and it felt smooth until red maps. quill rain is nice for better leveling but not needed... good league starter

If you like pathfinder you could probably start it and go in without a cemented plan. Those ascendancy points seem so generally good for chaos attacks you could level up all of them in your alt weapons and settle on whichever one you like later.
