GPU Overheating with game open

So to preface this, I've been playing with the same pc setup for the better part of two years now. The only change I've made is upgrading my PSU and even that was done around a year ago. In all this time I've had exactly zero issues with POE, maybe some crashes at the start of Heist league, but I attribute those to network coding more than anything.

In the last week I started updating POE to get ready for the new league, I didn't play any of the events so I'm unsure what all may have changed, but suddenly my gpu is stabilizing at around 87 degrees celcius. For comparison, Cyberpunk 77 on high settings runs at around 50 degrees, WoW runs at around 45. I've tinkered with my settings a bit to see if it's related to the graphics load or the renderer type but both Vulkan and DirectX11 even out at 87 degrees.

I don't know what causes this, but I'm hoping for a fix before league launch.
Specs:
GTX 1070 (EVGA FTW)
i7-8700K
16 GB ram
The only external change I've made is swapping the display from a 60Hz monitor to a 144Hz monitor.

Make sure the fans is clean on the GPU and check airflow also (maybe you have filters on the airflow in the cabinet that is full).
Also if you have changed your monitor like that with doing FPS cap, then suddenly you are asking the GPU to make 144 FPS in PoE where before you only did 60 FPS. That's a HUGE increase in load on the GPU.

So also try to use the FPS limiter in the PoE client and put it at 60 FPS.

PS.: This is not a bug but more a TECH issue.

So the fans on the GPU aren't an issue, not only have I cleaned them I also ordered 6 more fans to keep the overall build cool after the gpu overheated and turned off a few weeks before. In terms of the overall load being increased I can see that happening, but I've also turned off Vsync and limited to 60 and 144 respectively and saw only minimal changes. (87 to 84)
Going off memory alone, I remember that poe usually runs hot but always stabilized around 78ish. I'll test the game on my other screen as well to see if it actually helps.
well no matter what, it's not a bug "thingy". it's a TECH issue.

I kind of disagree. I think it's fair to say that when the pc runs fine on several games and shows an abnormal spike in temperature for specifically one game then it's fair to say there is a bug or an optimization issue with the game.
well as a minimum you should make a full DXDiag report and add it to your post using pastebin URL.
So GGG can see your hardware and driver versions.

Good idea, thanks.
WoW client is quite easy to run, CP disregarding all the bugs is based on mature well designed engine. PoE isn't.

The difference between 60 and 144 fps is quite significant, your GPU doing its best and the heat is natural result of that.

Your new display most likely has support of "adaptive sync", I'd recommend to turn it on.
Variable refresh rate gives you ability to chose "optimal" maximum fps without screen tearing, so you can set FPS cap in-game, 48 fps -background, 144 fps (or less) foreground.
Also in case you are using Global Illumination — I'd probably turn it off. Since Harvest GI consumes like 3 times more GPU resources than before
Problem: impostor syndrome
Solution: nerf everything
Result: depressing mess

Naive assumptions about the games optimisation aside.

The only change you have made is a new monitor with a higher refresh rate, if you are outputting those frames, more than double the amount of the previous monitor then yeah, that DOSE add a lot of stress to your GPU.

It's the difference between a jog and a full on sprint.

Sorry, what? A demanding game (which poe is) will tax your hardware far more than most other games. You can disagree or agree all you want, it's a plain fact that it's hardware related and has nothing to do with a bug in a game of any sort.

P.S. just noticed the 144mhz upgrade. If you expect your hardware to remain as cool while having to draw nearly two thirds higher amount of frames....then there is no real comment to be made here.
No rest for the wicked.
