How to go about beating Act 5 Avarius in HC

I also died to him more than I'd like to admit, he has high one-shot potential for newbies who facerolled previous bosses. Several bosses after him are much easier even with the same equipment.

This can help: https://youtu.be/Aso-rfA4R6E?t=247

It is all about learning how to dodge beam and fireballs. Not standing under the beam helps a lot, took me several deaths to understand this.

I advice to run self-imposed HC with several lives/continues (like 3 or 10), same feeling, but not as rage inducing and you can ignore offline deaths, learning is much quicker this way for hard cases like this boss. I am doing this, very fun.
You can check number of deaths with "/deaths" command.

i'd make a different argument. If OP wants to play HC he should be practicing on HC but overcompensate for the difficulty and reduce it as you learn the fights. Most bosses can't hit you if you run in moderate circle use that to learn the telegraphs then just approach it slowly.

If you go into Avarius with 2-2.5k hp capped res and some good regen you can basically putz about. This is a safer environment to practice the mechanics in just be aware that the bullet hell is a garbage move you need to be full aware of the telegraph for before you do the fight (watch a video if you don't know what it is, looks like hes about to hurl a discus)

Why do i say its garbage? Because the mechanic is clearly supposed to be that you hide behind a statue to avoid damage, yet 9 times out of 10 when he casts it all the statues are deactivated at the walls. It hits far too hard for a mechanic you are supposed to mechanically dodge and has needed fixing since they put him in IMO.
you don't need 2k hp at act 5....

More HP is always welcomed on HC, but Avarius and Kitava 5/10 are bosses who require mostly damage and knowledge in mechanics.
You don't have to tank anything in these fights, nor you are supposed to. Skipping phases fast is the key, the longer the fight - the greater probability to get your ass handed to you.

This is technically right; avoiding damage by killing the boss ASAP works very well. To learn the fight and turn it into a more routine event requires practice and a tankier character allows for more mistakes while gaining experience at managing the fight. Neither of these approaches is inherently wrong.

If the OP likes playing meta builds then torturo's approach is solid. If the OP doesn't want to build characters that do heavy damage, though, then a tankier character is likely to be a solid choice.
Now that prestige classes will finally leave lab in 4.0, will GGG get it right this time or will they find new ways to repeat old mistakes?

You do if you want to approach the fights by facetanking everything, it wasn't a recommendation on how to play the game its a recommendation on how to learn a fight on HC, especially ones with relatively "safe" values like the act bosses.

I levelled a few character in HC.....rule of thumb is at least 300 life each act. You need to be well geared to reach 2k at Act 5

And even you have 2k, if you miss twice in ball phase, you simply died.

Kitava and Innocence are both mechanically well cleared pattern of attack, learn it, and dodge it manually. A portal or log out script also save you.
