Character naming conventions

Other than the usual reservoir of puns and less-than-obvious pop references, I experimented briefly with different grammatical structures per league. One league every character was named using a [adjective][noun][proper noun] structure, such as 'SultryOverflowFallyn', while another was '[proper noun] the [present participle][noun]'...like, hm, So-and-soTheFulguratingFist. Both of these allowed for pretty specific, clear names, which a few people on my Flist found refreshing after the really weird, inexplicable shit I usually used.

Spoiler
Eg A few names related to my sword: OnegaiRoshi -- literally means 'Please, old master' in Japanese, but also sounds a little like 'Oni-Goroshi'. Or ZeroTwoFiveSixFour -- 02564 -- In Japanese again: (O)-Ni-Go-Ro-Shi. Maybe a little inspired by Darling in the Franxx there, but Japanese do numerical puns allll the time: 42 is considered very bad luck, because Shi-Ni can mean 'to die'.

Another one I did, far less flexible but quicker to use, was all Sith with the requisite 'Darth' followed by lazy Latin, such as (surprise) DarthFulguris. Seems I really liked lightning skills. Eh, Sithy enough I suppose.

I did consider just adding 'CJ' to some common names I couldn't get but that just looks like you're being something of a wannabe. Pass. Dark is the day I need to 'copy' a name like that.

But usually I'd rely on just puns and references -- literally hundreds of those in my PoE character history. Now and then I'd be really surprised to find a more direct reference name free, like 'SeswathaOfSohonc', but I often overestimate the popularity of 'The Prince of Nothing'.

But I won't lie: I do love that what I'm playing now has an offline mode and thus no naming restrictions, even though most of the time I'm still using mildly creative nomenclature instead of, say, 'Thor', 'Conan', or 'Legolas'. I just...can't.

PS Really dig the Star Trek names!

relax - it's just ones and zeros!
I usually spend between 1h to an evening naming a character.
I know, it's alot but it has to be meaningful to the character and build.
Sometime i also pick silly names.

As for conventions..they're all fantasy or show-related or history-related.

Mostly just random name based on the latest local meme I saw.
All my Marauder names are made up of Maori words I pilfered from an online dictionary. Probably a right insult to any native speaker lol.

yeah pretty much, which is why I go for 'peeing in someone's hunny pot' instead, if you catch my drift.

Punching down is one thing. I have no illusions my character's names will ever accomplish world peace but it helps to sound them out to remember why we can in the first place rather than go to jail or lose our internet.

Respect! Don't sweat it though: Karui isn't really a 'proper' Maori language. It's a typical fantasy approximate from what I've seen, although GGG did go to some pains to get it right. I spent a week researching the name for my first sword and in the end was like, 'dude, no one's going to care' and then I changed it to an English name later anyway.

I feel you. I've literally put off playing a build I wanted to try because I couldn't come up with the right name. And I've a feeling Support have probably done more 'character renaming services' for me than most other Exiles. I figure there's a reason they don't exactly advertise it, although I'm genuinely surprised they haven't monetised it. Other f2p games. It's hardly pay to win. And with name-picky bastards like me around, it's free money.

Being a Birdlover of Wraeclast, my characters all have a bird reference:

KiaOraRhoa
TenaKoeRhoa
DeliriousTIT
FlockOfDoom
Strausswalzer
RustyCollaredSeedEater
Bird lover of Wraeclast
Las estrellas te iluminan - Hoy te sirven de guía
Te sientes tan fuerte que piensas - que nadie te puede tocar
...Can you believe I never realised you stuck to that? I thought it was just a few characters.
