Death penalty on a game like POE doesnt make sense
|
So during heist if you die during lockdown you lose all item and your member doesnt even get exp.. so you lose both time and resource gaining nothing... something like this works on a game like dark souls where you can tell what exactly killed you and what you shouldve done instead... on path of exile there is just too much visual clutter where you cant tell what even killed you half the time... was it the ground effect or some clown shot you offscreen... Heist league itself the Npc, the setup, the rewards are all fun but some backward poor design choices like this really hurt the league(besides the bugs ofcourse).

If you don't want a penalty for dying, what do you suggest you get penalized for?

" something that isn't so regressive. dying in scrubcore PoE means time lost, which is just annoying. Diablo 2 had coin loss, not a big deal really, nobody used coins. Diablo 3 had durability loss, doesn't have a lot now. PoE couldn't do either of those things. The real answer is just to have no penalty. The end game bosses are already penalizing enough with sometimes 5+ hours of work, and you only get 6 tries before you need to do another 5+ hours to unlock them again. I can't think of another game that does this. PoE has simultaneously the worst scrubcore penalty of any ARPG I've ever played, and the most forgiving hardcore death penalty of any ARPG I've ever played (your character isn't outright deleted when you die in hardcore, which I think it should be). That's just a little backwards. |

" I see you didnt play many games then. WoW cuts your stats after death for some time for example, or in Tibia you lose 10% of your total exp and skill progress so you lose levels, sometimes even 3-4 on top of that you have 10% chance to lose any item you have equiped and you always lose backpack, Mu onlline you lose exp like here, shaiya also 10% exp loss, Cabal online exp lose and you pay for dungeon entries that are timed so if you die there you have little chance to complete itso you lose big time. I could go on but you should get the point. Stop being such crybaby and deal with it. Death penality at the very least makes you care and its not even a big one. " The death penalty is easy to deal with if you give up on leveling past 92 or 93 or so. That’s OK. It’s by design that most characters don’t get much from levels at that point; I personally make 95 my cap but often stop caring about deaths a few levels lower depending on the character. Once you stop caring about levels deaths are just funny. Only specific content like heist makes you lose loot when you die. For the rest, if 6 portals aren’t sufficient then your character isn’t strong enough for the content (or you’re not a good enough player, which is absolutely the case for me with A8 Sirus). Regarding HC, it seems to me your character gets moved to Standard rather than outright deleted as a way to encourage players to try HC. You still get deleted from the league. With multiple leagues, full deletion is pointless. If you NEED more punishment, delete your own character then self-flagellate with those chains Medieval monks used to whip themselves with. We're all in this leaky boat together, people. Last edited by demon9675#2961 on Oct 10, 2020, 5:19:38 PM

THe penalty is there so that everyone doesnt just cheese content with Cast on Death builds. Because that's what you would do.

If I can't die and suffer for it, then I don't wanna play....
ARPG or FPS...don't matter. Makes me strive to git gud. -Time to be funny. The world needs funny right now! Warning: "Might" get you muted.
25 Exalts...oh God my stupidity stuck! Now onto 25 Divines... |

" But that's the whole point, though. It's there to force you to care about not dying. To care about your build. To care about your gear. To encourage you to 'do better' or 'improve'. It's there to tell you you're either doing content not suitable for your character, or that your character isn't suitable to the content. Now, if we had no penalty, people would be 'cheezing' content in an even larger degree than now. Defenses would be useless, and the game would revolve even more around offenses, creating glass-cannon builds everywhere. GGG clearly do not want that, and they have tools in place to prevent that. Is the current death penalty 'perfect'? I don't really know, I haven't thought about it, because I see no problems with it. I've lived long enough and played enough games in my youth to not feel very 'penalized' by this particulat penalty. What I'm trying to ask here, is: Can it be done differently? Sure. Absolutely. As long as it forces you care about not dying, and care about building a well though-out build, with gear that matches the content you are trying to do. If you can't fail, how are you supposed to feel any sense of accomplishment? Bring me some coffee and I'll bring you a smile. Last edited by Phrazz#3529 on Oct 10, 2020, 9:00:41 PM

This is why everyone runs chayula pure breachstones to level when in mid to high 90s and if you die doing that then yeah that's just sad as it's easy as heck.
You need a penalty in this kind of game otherwise you'll just go full glass cannon not caring whether you die, totally ignoring most build aspects. If anyone is using all 6 of their portals to a map or end game boss then that is just your fault and yours alone, get a better build. Last edited by firenovix#6291 on Oct 10, 2020, 9:03:12 PM
