Sorry, when's the last time you talked to me? I happen to think Wræclast sounds far better than Ray-clast. Kind of Scottish or Irish, which is probably unsurprising, all things considered.

Sorry, but to a guy that uses that letter daily, "Wræclast" sounds horrible, and far from Scottish/Irish/Keltic. Sounds more like a fisherman from the Faroe Islands trying to discribe the weather.

But I shouldn't have included you in that... Judgement. For that, I am truly sorry.

Weeeell Hollywood has pretty much cemented the latter sounding like the former...

I figured the ae in 'wraeclast' would sound the same as in 'hwaet' and yes I am on my tablet, pretend I alt-145ed it. :p

PS Ormurin Lange is pure fucking \m/.

Oh no. We are way off topic...

Props.

That would be a first! (I think this thread encourages some off topic stuff, though).

The contries that are using the letter in their languages, are pronouncing it as you(?) English-speakers would pronounce "cat", or how American people would pronounce "class" (or "...clast", for that manner). British people, as well as Australians, would on the other hand pronounce "class" and "clast" with a clear "a" rather than an "æ", I would think.

Anyhow, it's a pretty common vowel over here, together with its friends "ø" and "å".

Pertinent point here is GGG are Kiwi, and definitely pronounce it 'Ray-clahst'. You're right though. If Hwæt is 'hwat' (rhyming with cat, give or take), then it'd be something like 'Wrack-last'...I *think*.

AH, here we go!

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/wræc

"misery, torment

Ende næfre ðines wræces weorþeþ.
Your sufferings will never end.

Descendants
English: wrack"

So 'wrack-last' is pretty close. But we need to clarify the 'last'.

http://www.csun.edu/~sk36711/WWW/KAG/ch3.html#:~:text=It%20is%20pronounced%20with%20a,%3A%20hlaford%2C%20hronr%C3%A6d%2C%20hw%C3%A6t.

"short a is pronounced like the Modern English "o" sound in "contact""

So Wræclast in Old English would sound something like Wrack-lost.

Believe it or not, this hasn't felt like a waste of time at all. :)

bwam: I'd suggest 'Badass Looters of Wræclast' but you know that acronym is taken. :P
